| Liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery I am in the middle of the process to get approved for by pass surgery. I am really worried about being on a liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery. Can anyone please share with me their experience? What kind of protein drinks did you use? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I am scheduled to have my surgery in a little over two weeks. My surgeon only requires a low/no carb diet for two weeks prior in order to shrink the liver. For this I am grateful . With that said, I'm planning on doing no/low carbs for the first week and then switch to liquid for the second in order to get myself in the right frame of mind for post surgery. My hope is that the week of protein with help me detox from sugar and the second week from...well...food.

There are a lot of previous threads on the pre op liquid diet.
Day 3-4 will be the toughest, after that, it will get easier.

| This is the 2-week program my wife and I both used before our surgeries. It gives you everything you need to get through the ordeal. I lost 15 pounds on it.
No matter what you use, it's no fun. The 2-week pre-op diet is boring, monotonous, frustrating and totally unsustainable. Some say it's the worst part of the whole journey. DO IT ANYWAY!!! No cheating. Your success at sticking with this before surgery is a good indicator of your likelihood of long-term success after surgery.
As the good doctor told you, the third day is the worst. Your body is detoxing from a lifetime of sugar abuse and it's trying to switch its main energy source from carbs to burned fat reserves. What you will experience is very much like drug withdrawal symptoms, because it is. The drug is sugar, and it's a powerful one!!
My wife was just packing to go up to the hospital for her surgery when she got a call from the surgeon's office pushing her date back three weeks. So she came off the pre-op diet for a week, then did another two weeks of liquids! Four weeks total of liquid pre-op diet. She lost 20 pounds doing it, too, which was a great kickstart, and it made it so that when the surgeon hit a problem during the surgery, there was enough room internally that he didn't have to go to an open procedure.

I'm on day 7 of my 2 week liquid diet and it just flat out SUCKS! So I don't have any better news for ya but its pretty awful...My doctor recommends using Bariatric Advantage and says that I can have 4 shakes a day with one very small, well proportioned meal or 5 shakes a day. I can mix mine with skim milk (and ONLY skim) so that is what I do with the chocolate flavor...it actually taste like a milkshake. I never thought I could hate a milkshake but I have learned it is for sure possible! I haven't cheated though because I know that in order to my surgery to be as successful as possible I need to do whatever I can. Why would I do something to make it more difficult on the surgeon and jeopardize my health?? My surgery is next Monday and I guess I am just so mentally determined that even though I have been miserable the past 7 days I KNOW it is well worth it! Good Luck

you can do it - I got through mine well. I was blessed that I didn't have headaches during it.
Perfesser has given you some good advice, as have others

I never had headaches during the liquid diet, and the withdrawal wasn't too bad for me, either. The reason for that is that I had started living the WLS rules months earlier and had adopted basically a low-carb lifestyle. As I was taking in very little sugar during that time, there was less to work out of my system. This is why I so frequently recommend to newbies who have the time to do so that they give up their dysfunctional relationship with food long before surgery and start developing the good habits they will need anyway post-op.
Your mileage may vary, but those who do it seem to have fewer problems.

I am on day 2 of my 2 week pre-surgery liquid diet. BUT I was on a month long lowcarb diet before that.
I am drinking iospure, ensure high protein shakes, bullion so far. I am allowed to puree soups as long as they are no carb soups, as well as sugar free jello and sugar free pudding. I can also have the Dannon fit and light carb control yogurt as long as there are no chunks. I went on unjury.com and ordered unflavored protein powder and the chicken soup. I am limited to 800-1,000 cals a day and am to get in about 75 grams of protein a day.
You can do this. There are many of us that are doing this along with you as we speak! We can cheer each other on.
