Everyone sais to take your calcium pill 2 hours after your multivitamin pill. My stupid question is.......... what happens if you dont wait the 2 hours and take it sooner? Im just real curious and figured I would put it put there.........lol Thanks

I've never heard of taking calcium pills, 2 hours apart from multi vitamins, I know that iron must be taken 2 hours apart from calcium, other wise there are absorption problems. It was suggested that I take my iron pill at bed time. I take it with vitamin C. Congrats on your upcoming surgery

Not a stupid question at all. It's very important that you understand how your body now works so you can do the right things.
It depends on if your multivitamin has iron in it. I take flintstone chewables complete which does have iron. The iron and the calcium are taken up at the same receptors. With the bypass, many of the ireon/calcium receptors are in the tail that connects the old stomach with the intestines at the Y. This "tail" doesn't get exposed to any food anymore so we have fewer receptors available for iron/calcuim uptake. If you take both at the same time you are likely to not take up enough. One also overrides the other - I'm not sure but I think the calcium is the one that will get taken up and the iron just passes through.
If you are taking your iron separate from your multivitamin then it's best to take it at bedtime with some Vit C (orange juice). You'll get the best uptake that way.

I was told to also wait 2 hours to take my calcium after my vitamins....because of iron not absorbing with calcium or calcium not absorbing with iron...Not sure which. My instructions are to take a multivitamin with iron. I do not take an iron supplement.

I'd listen to these guys. I was never told anything specific and I take a whole handful of vitamins at the same time. I'm still breathing :P

It's the iron and calcium that need to be taken 2 hours apart. Multi's usually have lower levels of iron, which don't really do much to interfere with the calcium. BUT, iron supplements themselves are much higher dosages, and taking these with calcium citrate will diminish the amount absorbed of both. Dave

If you take calcium and iron together the calcium will block the absorption of the iron. Making it so that you do not get what you need in iron. So you may want to take a separate iron pill if your multi has both in them. Also is you are a menstruating female you need to take a higher dose then those who are not.
I learned the hard way. And now my iron is only 25.

I appreciate all of the responses from all of you, I guess that I must have confused the iron pill with the calcium pill, there are so many things we need to know and it kinda gets overwhelming at times. I had a hysterectomy last year so I dont take an iron pill, at least not until my doc tells me I need to to...lol

I was told not to take my iron and calcium at the same time because they don't
"play nice" with each other. Not quite as technical, but same message!
