Hi there -
I had my surgery on Nov 30. The biggest tip I can give is go into your surgery with a "Kick butt and take names" attitude. I told myself before surgery I was not going to let it keep me down and that I was gonna be up walking the hospital halls that night. I also made a goal to get off painkillers as fast as I could. And it worked. I was off my painkillers and on to Tylenol 5 days out. So far - no complications! I am less than a month out - today I went to the gym and did 2.5 miles on the treadmill in an hour. That never would have before.

Start now to live the WLS rules of nutrition that you will have to follow for the rest of your life. Form good habits while the stress is low so you can slip back into them after surgery rather than forming them during a time of higher stress. You will never regret it!

Dealing with complications does a doozy on you physically and emotionally. Im really really happy for you...Im envious of your progress. Awesome job on the 2.5 mi! Thats amazing! For me, Im only about to walk about half of a mile (on a good day) before I need to rest. Keep up the great work!
Lukesmom - first of all, welcome to the board! My biggest piece of advice is to begin cutting your portion sizes. It will help you adjust to the mindset that its only going to take 1-2 oz at first to fill your pouch. I agree with perfesser, start following the rules - It will make your transition a lot smoother. One more thing, start trying out different protein supplements to get a feel for what you like post surgery but only buy a couple because your tastes are going to change post surgery and you may not like them afterwards.

I agree with Melanie. I did pretty much what she said. Cut portions ahead of time and start tasting protein drinks now.Keep positive thoughts and get prepared for when you come home. Have what you need now... and get some support in place.
It is hard for me to believe I had surgery almost one year ago..Where did the time go?? Can't figure that!! GOOD LUCK and GO FO IT. If I can do it, you can too. Fight for it!

My only advice is understand that when it comes to eating after the surgery, it's a completely different mindset. You will not look at food the same. I've had a bit of complications as I wrote about in my blog with the incision, and like others I haven't done well with the pain. I am not really exercising too much right now due to another setback with the incision ( prior to surgery less than a year ago I was training for a 5k, thanks to my knee taking a doozy that ended), but take it slow and listen to your body and your doctor. READ these forums, and get to know someone else who has had the surgery, they will help motivate you and so will this place. When I get discouraged, I like to look through different websites with before and after pics, OR I whine in my blogs about it...always helps though.
And the people on here are fantastic.

I would start one of the protein drinks to replace a meal....and make it that meal you tend to either A) eat alot at (if you can measure) or B) at your hungriest time. I went cold turkey because my date was changed.....and so I didn't have to do the full two weeks of liquid diet but my 8 days were torture enough FOR ME. (I lost 20lbs in 8days too) Everyone is different....but even after my surgery I still hate this liquid diet.....and let me tell you...you're most likely going to have carb withdrawl because there are carbs in everything! So...that's something I wish I had done....and then write down goals...for when you'll increase to just the drinks....and if you're spiritual (which I'm not that spiritual but I embraced it before surgery...cause I have a 1yr old to run home too) that helped me too....that might be your motivation like dsptchr was talking about?!

My biggest tip is understand that you WILL go through a depression after surgery that is completely normal. You are mourning food! The first time you smell or see something that you really used to love to eat might be the trigger but expect it and understand it and that will help you realize what it is so you can deal with it and get over it quickly. You will have false hunger. You think you should be hungry but your really not so it's a wierd feeling. You will also be afraid to eat the first time. How big a bite do I take, how much do I chew it, when am I full? Really funny when we look back on it but it may not be to you. Relax - I used childrens utensils to start. It was more mental probably but it helped me. Not all hospitals are well versed in bypass surgeries so if yours is NOT you need to check everything they bring you to drink or eat! Check the labels for sugar content! I know many that dumped the first time in the hospital! Spouses feel scared when it comes time to surgery. You have to remove jewelry so if you are married right his name on your ring finger (it will make a difference). Good Luck to you!
