I know they vary greatly. Can you post your sample diet for the 2 week preop and what your surgeon required.

How was your success?

Thanks!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

For my two weeks I could have protein drinks, jello, broth, decaf tea, water & 1 small salad a day. That was it.

thanks!

Why is there such a variation to get to thesame goal? My best friend had her RNY yesterday and her surgeon did not require the 2 week preop diet. She had a normal xmas dinner on the 24th and did 2 days of clear liquids. Her surgeon told her she had one of the smallest livers he had seen.

I am diabetic and my sugars have been so out of whack on just protein shakes and SF liquids. I was feeling great today but am wondering if switching to a strict atkins diet will still give me the same results. I have surgery in 13 days

I was on a clear liquid diet plus 3 protein shakes a day for 10 days. I made homemade chicken broth, drank a lot of water and ate sf popsicles. Under my doctors supervision I came off my diabetes meds at the start of this but had to take my glucose more often to monitor the levels. I've been off the meds and diabetes free ever since!

All docs are different. I wasn't required to do any diet or clear liquids before surgery. "Nothing after midnight."
It was suggested that if I could lose some weight before surgery it would be better for me. I lost 8 lbs before I met with the bariatric nurse.. she calculated my stats and said if I stuck on 1600 calories a day (yes 1600) I would lose more weight. I lost 12 more lbs just cutting down... and keeping within 1600 lbs... so 20 lbs down.
Good luck.

Here's the sample low-carb, liver-shrinking diet that I was given to start two weeks before my surgery:
Breakfast: 1 slice whole wheat bread
100g 5% spreadable white cheese
2 fresh vegetables

Snack: 1 container yogurt

Lunch: 250g chicken/turkey/fish/beef
small bowl of cooked vegetables

Snack: 1 container yogurt or pudding up to 3% fat

Dinner: 1 slice whole wheat bread
50g pastrami (1% fat)
can tuna or 1 egg
10 olives or 1T tehina or 1T mayonnaise

Snack: small bowl of SF ice cream or SF pudding
Then, the day before surgery, I'm to switch to an all-liquid diet in which I can have:
  • 12-14 glasses of water (mandatory)
  • fruit juice (strained, no pulp)
  • clear broth
  • tea
  • SF popsicles
  • SF jello
Finally, complete fasting (not even a sip of water) starting at midnight before the surgery.

Looking at everyone else's responses, the two-week plan seems excessive to me... but that's what I was given. Not sure what to think now. I can't tell you you how it worked for me (and when I will be able to, you'll be long post-op), but I wish you the very best of success!!

I know, it's weird how so many of them are different I'm almost willing to bet that my surgeon is the only one who says no more than two meals a day even now!! I don't follow this rule any longer but did up until I was about 10 months out, then I started working out more and was told by my trainer I wasn't losing because I wasn't fueling my body enough, I started eating more and wala I started losing again.

I'm not at that point yet, but my surgeon had me replace one meal with a protein shake when I started seeing him. The nutritionist told me to expect him to up that to 2 replaced meals with protein shakes when I see him on the 4th.

The shake he asks his patients use doesn't mess with your sugars - I'm diabetic as well.

He wants his patients to use Bariatric Essentials.
