Hi everyone!
I am scheduled to have RNY gastric bypass on 2/6/12...I'm so excited...mostly nervous about the 2 week clear liquid diet I have to start on 1/27. Is it really as horrible as it sounds?

| Hi Mandy and welcome to the group.
Congrats on your upcoming surgery, best of luck to you as you begin this new, exciting journey! The 2 week liquid diet isn't that bad, the first 3 or 4 days are the worst. You can do it! Keep us posted on how it goes. |

My wife did the 2-week diet, and was packing to go up to the hospital for her surgery the next day when they called and pushed her date back three weeks. She came off it for a week, then did two more weeks and had her operation, which was a total success.
The 2-week diet sucks! It is boring, monotonous, the first few days are like drug detox as you work the poison sugar out of your system, and it is absolutely essential that you follow your surgeon's instructions to the letter. I found the month after surgery a lot easier than the 2-week pre-op diet, mainly from a psychological point of view (I had something to look forward to as I worked through the phases.)
If ya gotta do it, ya gotta do it. It's lousy, but it's required, so do it.
The first three days you may be about as much fun as a she-bear with a toothache and a migraine, so warn those you care about that they may want to get out of your way, and ask them not to take anything during this time personally. Just tell 'em up front, and then try to stay out of their way so you don't do something you'll have to apologize for later!
You can do it!! It's a rite of passage for many of us. If we can do it, you can too!!
Good luck!!

For me the 2 week pre op wasn't bad. I planned what I was going to eat and packed it in a cooler to take to work with me. My pre-op consisted of no carbs though. Not an easy feat in my home, where pasta is a huge thing. But, I persevered and made it through. then the day before my surgery, was straight clear liquids, water, broth and jello. Not bad either. If you want it bad enough, you will do what it takes to get there.

you have to do 2 weeks of CLEAR liquids? or 2 weeks of liquids??? they're 2 different things.... you might want to check to be clear.
I realize every surgeon is different... I have to do 2 weeks of liquid protein, then the day before surgery is clear liquids.

We never had a clear liquid requirement pre-op.
One thing that will make the whole experience a lot easier is if you have started living the WLS rules in advance and have already cut the excess carbs from your diet. The detox portion then is pretty much done. Going cold turkey can be hard on a body!
