Default I think I am reading too much.

I really want to be optimistic, BUT it is the mortality rate that is scaring me. 3 in 1000!!! Is that still the current statistic. I think I need to quit reading everything I can get my hands on. If it wasn't for that darn blood clot in 2002, I would probably not be as worried. I am going to meet the Dr. & anesthesioligist on the 5th and 6th. isn't that pretty far ahead of time? 20 days. I was expecting it be a week ahead of surgery. The Dr. did ask for more medical records from when I had the blood clot. It was a pulmonary embolism which Means it went through my heart and into my lungs. They say I am lucky to be alive. Am I pushing my luck here? Somebody please tell me how to not be scared now. Did you all feel this way? Help. Mattie

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Mattie you know I haven't had mine, but I will tell you why they wanna meet with you so early. Any test they want done, blood work, EKG, etc they will order probably then. Then get the results back. If any thing needs fixing etc most of the time they have time to take care of it before hand. That is what we do. If our people just have ENT problems don't have theres done 2 weeks before hand we cancel them. That is for your own safety. Trust me I have been cussed out several times for it. But.....its for your own sake. He may have you come back right before hand to for final signatures etc. And Im SURE they will give you a list of meds NOT to take for a couple weeks before your surgery. That is another reason they will bring you in so early. Now for the rest of your questions......the pros on here can help you better. Im sure your gonna excel at this honey.

shoot my doctor told me the mortality rate was 1 to 100. and Im not even worryed. I put compleat trust im my surgen that he is always looking out for my best intrest. so with that sead don't worry thats why they do all the pre-testing. My doctor sead in most cases things go bad when people keep secrates and dont tell the doctor things they need to know and when they find the problem its to late.

good luck dont stress

Mattie, hi. My name is Natasha. I just had the surgery on the 15th of may. I can tell you that I wish I read everything before I got this surgery. I'm not at the point that I'm regretting the surgery but I'm very concern about all the side effects, etc. See with me I wanted this soo bad that I didnt want to read anything before and now that I'm home on disability I read a lot. I have 3 little kids and I wonder if I made the right decision but all i can tell you is that I prayed a lot before the surgery and now this site helps me a lot with all my emotions and questions. I'm sure the doctor will check all your medical history and if he feels that you shouldnt have the surgery or if its too risky -they wont do it. The recovery is not bad, just a lot of adjustments to your lifestyle. Understanding what to expect is important i think. Good luck!

Knowledge is power and its ok to keep reading both the good and the bad of this surgery. The more you know the better off you are at following the program and discovering problems early. I have to say that I am almost 2 years post op and have not had any major complications from this surgery. My results have been positive in more ways then one. It is a risk we take when we have this surgery however the risk of being obese brings lots of complications in itself. It is such a personal decision and you have to be well informed at at peace with yourself when you decide to go through with it. Also you have to be totally commited to following the program. All surgeries come with risks, many of the risks are in the actual OR so the most important reading and researching you can do is on your surgeon of choice and hospital affiliation....Think positive and remember you are doing this for better health! Goodluck!

Love ya

Okay, so the mortality rate is 3 in 1000 or 1 in 100 or whatever.
Do you know what the mortality is for any OTHER major surgeries? The risk with other surgeries when the patient is obese?
Not much difference there. In other words, with a skilled and experienced surgeon, the mortatlity rate is no different from, say, heart surgery or brain surgery or cancer surgery or whatever, when the respective surgeons are very well trained in their particular speciality.
If you had to have these surgeries, which would you be worried about more, the mortality rate, or the illness/disability you will have to face without the particular surgery?

If you are worried, ask for your surgeon's data, if he hasn't already told you.
It's useful to know all the bad and the good of this surgery, but keep in mind, where success and failure of your surgery is concerned, it's your surgeon's record that is going to relate to you, not some other surgeon's.

I'll tell you a trade secret of ours from my 30+ years of working in the medical field. Funny thing, if you expect bad things, if you let your thoughts pick up negative vibes, you are going to have a harder time than someone in the same shoes with a very postitive attitude. If a patient has *expectations* that things can turn bad, no matter how much the drs are on the lookout (and we do watch out when we pick up negative vibes from our patients) something seems to happen.
So, try to keep a positive outlook, good emotions raise your immunity level, you know.

As for the drs asking to meet you early, that's a sign that they are very commited to making everything safe for you. The more data they have on hand, the better equipped they are, in treating you and in taking steps to prevent some likely events. If they said, "Okay, the next time I'll see you is in the sugery room" weeks ahead of your surgery, that's when I would be worried.
Trust your own judgement that you have chosen a very capable surgeon and bariatric center, I am sure you did a lot of research when choosing where to go.

((((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

(((HUG)))) MATTE!
i can imagine how overwhelmed your feeling during these stages...
I think we all go thru it very differently.
EVEN when first home from the hospitol!
HANG in there and I am sure all will be fine.
SOUNDS like you have a thorough team on your
side checking things thru before the surgery.
