I had open and I'm very pleased.
I had open RNY on 6/18 and I'm very pleased with everything. My recovery in the hospital was 3 days and the pain was manageable. I came off pain meds on the 5th day and switched to an occassional Tylenol.
My surgeon has been doing open for 29 years, performed over 5000 surgeries and has a great bed side manner. I decided to go with him because of the research I had done on him and I trusted him completely. I even travel 2 hours to see him although I had many other choices.
He explained to me once that he felt the anatomy of the cutting of the organs was more invasive with the lap. I also see from experience that my diet has progressed much more quickly over many of my lap counter parts. I didn't have to go on a liquid diet prior to surgery and I didn't have to loose any weight prior to surgery either.
I know these things are different surgeon to surgeon. My biggest advice would be to do your homework and talk to many people in your area to make sure whichever procedure you choose (lap or open), be entirely comfortalbe with your surgeon (you'll be seeing him/her for the rest of your life) and also make sure you like his/her team (the NUT, excercise person, psych person, office staff etc.)
I'm happy to answer more about my open if you're interested. Best of luck!
Amy
