Surgery is still a go for Tuesday. It was a very, very long day as there were some special tests that had to be done at the hospital. My surgeon surprised me by telling me that he needs to take out my gall bladder. I don't have stones, it is filled with 'cholesterol deposits'? He said that was more serious and can't be ignored. I never heard of such a thing but he assured me that I would have been in an emergency room by the end of the year having it removed anyway. He seemed surprised when I told him I have never had any pain in my right side. Apparently I should be doubled over frequently. Who knew I was so ignorant of pain? Not to make light of it, it freaked me out because I profess to be pretty knowledgeable about things and I have never heard of this complication.

The good news is that he is sure he will be able to take it out during my surgery and that there won't be a need to open me up. The bad news is that he insists on me having a 'G' tube for a minimum of five weeks post-op. Now isn't that going to be fun!?!

Doc, do you know any more about this and why the tube? TIA

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

ITS very common for surgeons to take out the gall bladder at the time of gastric bypass surgery. ME and my surgeon opted to keep mine in cause it was fine but it could have gone bad during the rapid weight loss.
I was put on a prescription during the rapid weight loss months to prevent any troubles with my gall bladder.

I have several freinds that had to get it out during rapid weight loss so its proly best if he sees slight signs of trouble to get it out!

I second what Lisa says. I too didnt have to have mine out and Im on a script now for prevention of that during my rapid weight loss. Knock on wood its ok. But I too have heard that alot of people get theirs taken out while they get the bypass. A co-worker who had it done 3 years ago had to have hers out too. So yeah I have heard of it too. I would say better now than recouping and then having to go back in again for another sugery to get the gallbladder out.

Well honey a G tube is a feeding tube. Im not quite sure why hes doing that except to make sure you maintain protein im sure.

The gallbladder issue is a good thing honey. I have had mine out. My own son had his out at 11. I had a sister in law have her removed 2 weeks after her C-Section. Now can you imagne that. Its acutally common for them to take it out. Most Drs do a Ultrasound to see if its ok or it should be taken out during surgery. They just do it keyhole style. Im sure thru the same incisions they make for the GB. Dont worry about this part honey. Its almost protocol any more.

Im sure he didnt tell you gallbladder pains are different with evey one. I had mine hurt under the rib yes... but up my back and into my shoulder blade. My sons give him Phantom pain on the oppisite side until his last attack. Poor thing was 11 years old. His was due to sludge. Nothing much was getting through it. Dr said he a 5 year old girl was his youngest patient. So dont sweat that.

Not this one. It is both a drainage tube and a feeding tube. He showed it to me and showed me how I would use it and said that I COULD use it as a feeding tube but he would rather that I try to get my nutrition by mouth. I am going to have to drain it four times a day and then flush it afterward.

Well thank goodness. I more used to a JP Drain. There are all different in the ways they do things. I have noticed some never have a drain and some do. Its to keep the fluid off and it can even help in case of a leak to. Make sure and I know you will... clean it like they say to honey.

They took my gall bladder too and fixed a hernia, but I didn't have an extra drain....they took the JP out at the hospital.. The weirdest feeling in the world bar none....

Wonder why some do the other drain and some don't?

I HAD 2 DRAINS. THE JP AND THIS OTHER ONE WHICH LOOKS LIKE A URINE BAG OR IV BAG STRAPPED TO MY LEG. THE JP THEY TOOD OUT WHEN I LEFT THE HOSPITAL (oucccchhhhh!) AND THE OTHER ONE I STILL HAVE DUE TO COMPLICATIONS. HOPEFULLY HE WILL TAKE IT OUT NEXT WED. I CANT WAIT TO HAVE IT REMOVED CAUSE ITS UNCOMFORTABLE BUT SCARED CAUSE IT HURT LIKE HELL WHEN HE DID TAKE IT OUT.

Okay, sorry I'm not a surgeon, so I can't say for sure, but do you mean that your surgeon will be putting a tube into the stomach that will be stapled off from your pouch because it is *closer* to where the GB is connected? It sounds rather like what we call PEG, a button/tube inserted to the stomach from the tummy wall to feed people who can't swallow. From your explanation, that seems to be how it is to be, because of your GB issue. "Cholesterol deposits" is acutally what the major component of sludge, and sludge solidifies into stones. It is often accompanied with infection and inflammation, which most likely is the case for you, as your surgeon asked if you had any symptoms and was surprised that you didn't. This infection/inflammation is probably the reason he wants to leave the G tube in place for 4 weeks, to drain the area of any extra excretions.
If there was a diagram of how it is, I would be able to explain better how it's supposed work.
Sorry, I'm not much of a help here, I haven't had the time to look it up.
