| I was wondering if anyone who has had the surgery had a hiatal hernia going into your surgery? The reason I am asking is that in my consultation, my surgeon spoke about how if we had a hernia, she would repair it while she was performing the surgery. At that point I was pretty clueless to the different types of hernias there could be. Basically I knew about umbilical hernias...and that is because my puppy had one that was fixed when she was spayed. However, since my consultation, I have had an upper GI scope; which revlealed that I have ulcers in my stomach and esophagus. This really wasn't a surprise because I has having acid reflux issues lately. What was a surprise was that I have a hiatal hernia. I was told by my gastro Dr that they usually don't fix hiatal hernias unless it is causing a lot of problems. When I looked online to learn more, hiatal hernia repair looks pretty complicated to fix. So I was wondering if anyone on the losing side had this issue and how it turned out. Did it make your surgery more complicated or with possible complications? Thanks

| Super Moderator | Hiatal hernia is farily common with obesity, from what I know. The repair may sound complicated at a glance for someone without medical training, but not really. If it is bad, the surgeon will have to repair the hernia, as if he/she didn't you could easily have your pouch slipping through the opening and getting lodged above the diaphragm. Theoretically speaking, the repair shouldn't cause you any trouble post op.
