I have an appt. this week with my doctor for a referral for gastric bypass. My husband has his appt. with the surgeon in January. I was diagnoses with diabetes this year and was unable to get the numbers down without meds. Also have high BP that is not as low as it should be with the meds I am taking. My C reactive protein is positive, triglycerides are high, and cholesterol has started to go over 200. I feel like a walking time bomb! even though I have been exercising more and eating better than ever. I have lost 12 pounds since April. We have Federal Blue Cross which does cover bariatric surgery, but I don't know what they require. I'm hoping that things will progress quickly once we see the surgeon.

How long can we expect to be out of work with the laproscopic gastric bypass? Would you recommend that my husband and I have it at the same time or stagger the dates? We are both in early 50's and have 3 children at home (ages 6 and twin 15).

Thank you.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the site and congratulations to you and your hubby on your decision to have surgery!

I was out of work two weeks with my lap RNY. It really depends on how demanding your work is. I'm on the road quite a bit and I was okay after two weeks.

Putting myself in your shoes, I would stagger the surgeries a little. Having it together, neither of you would be able to drive or would feel like doing much of anything for the first week or two. If you staggered it, you would be able to take care of each other a little bit. It may be really difficult with a young one if both of you recovering at the same time.

Good luck on your journey! Keep us posted on how things are going.

Chrissy

WOW, you have your hands full dont you? I would suggest to stagger since you will need to count on one another. Congrats! And oh yeah, WELCOME to the boards. Glad you found us.
I was out for 2 full week and then went back p/t for about 4 weeks. It made things so much easier for me to not HAVE to do the full days, but then again, it was really hard to go back to f/t! LOLOL

I have BCBC too, mine is the federal one though. I called them and asked them what they require. They require a 6 month doctor supervised diet, a five year history of obesity, and documentation of co-morbidty conditions (the number depends on the level of your bmi). Once I documented those things and did the 6 month diet and the surgeon submitted the paper work to the insurance company, it only took about a month to be approved. I probably spent a year or less from start to finish. But I put the surgery off a month or so because my son was getting married and I wanted to wait till after the wedding.

BCBS is great insurance for this type of procedure. I would call them and talk with them. Of course, your surgeon is going to know what they require.

I was out of work for 4 weeks. I would recommend that you don't do the surgery at the same time. You are going to need someone to help take care of you. You will be limited on things you can do for the first 6 weeks. Even though my surgery was laproscopic, I still couldn't lift anything over 10 lbs for at least 6 weeks and couldn't exercise until after 4 weeks. It is major surgery and you have to be careful afterwards.
Welcome to the boards. Looking forward to seeing you around here.

I agree i would stagger the surgerys. This is major surgery so someone will have to have there wits about them while the other one heals. Good luck to you on this.

As far as your insurance comapany goes you have probally got one of the best ones as far as payment goes. The Federal plans are always good. My suggestion is to call them. Ask them for the criteria you have to meet to have it done This will help you and your husband both when having to meet it. Remember if there is a part you dont meet they dont have to approve it so just do ask they ask. It seems silly I know but it keeps them in check.

Thank you all for the infor and advice. I have summers off, so it would probably be best if I can have it done late June/early July. We will definately stagger the surgeries now! Thanks again.

Also Ask You Surgeons Office If They Know The Requirements Of Your Insurance Because I Called Bcbs About 2-3 Different Times And All Times They Would Talk About A 6 Month Diet. Well It Turns Out All Contracts Are Different With Bcbs So It Depends On The Contract Your Job Has With Them. My Dh Is A Suffolk County Cop In Ny And Has Bcbs And My Doc Office Said You Have The Best Insurance WITH Bcbs Thru Suffolk County Doesnt Require A 6 Month Diet Plan. It Ended Up She Was Right And All Those Phone Calls I Made Were Wrong. I Ended Up Getting Approved In Less Than 24 Hours.

Also I Think You Guys Should Do Your Surgeries Seperate. I Have A Little One At Home And Thank God My Dh Was Able To Take Care Of Her Especially Since I Had A Lot Of Complications. So I Was Out Of Commission For A While.

Good Luck To You Both
