| Big Loser | EGD is an abbreviation for a very long word called: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. It is where they put a fiberoptic instrument (a scope) down down your esophagus to check your stomach and duodenum to see how everything is working. As far as the purpose, other than just to see what is going on, you would have to ask your doctor - he may be looking for something specific, this might just be something that is routinely done at this stage of where you are. That I dont' know. With an EGD they can look for all kinds of things - ulcers, diverticula, inflammation, tumors. strictures, masses, obstructions, erosions - those sorts of things. If you aren't having any symptoms and your doctor hasn't told you specifically why he/she is doing it, it might just be a routine thing. But again, you would really need to ask him/her. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Honey its a preop test most surgeons require to have done. There is nothing to it! You go in go to sleep and wake up. They are gonna view the stomach to make sure things look good so they can proceed with the surgery. It dont hurt a bit. |

| Super Moderator | THe EGD is basically routine. The surgeon wants to be sure your stomach is healthy. No ulcers and stuff going on. If you have an ulcer, that will have to be treated first before you can get a surgery date. It has happened before to members on this board, which put back their surgery date a month or so. Many surgeons are also check out the existence of a bacterium called Helicobacter Pylorii, abbreviated as H. Pylorii. This bacteria is a known culprit for causing ulcers, so if you test positive for that, you will be given a course of antibiotics that's 5-7 days, to clear you of the infection, given a second test (which doesn't have to be an EGD, it can be done through your blood or urine) to confirm that the bacteria has been taken care of, before setting up your date. All these tests you have to take are to make sure that your basic health is good, and can withstand the surgery which is an invasive procedure no matter what the method, lap or open, bypass or banding. For the best opportunity and best chances for least complications, the better your condition needs to be, and if there is anything that needs to be treated, be treated before surgery, for as successful as possible a surgery.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I had an EGD done four weeks post op because I wasn't able to eat much. It would take me all day to drink a bottle of water, so you can imagine how long it took to get any food down. My doc said that when the pouch starts to heal, scar tissue forms and sometimes can make the opening into the pouch smaller or even close up. Mine had gotten to be as small as a straw. They knocked me out and dilated it and that was it. I was sick when I woke up and threw up all afternoon but I think it was the pain med they gave me. It just didn't agree with me. I had a bit of a sore throat for about 2 days, but I can drink and eat good portion sizes now. It was really worth it and it was no big deal. Good Luck! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Yeah, I didn't have one either. Just an upper GI. But hey girl.....whatever they want done DO IT!!!!! lol It's all about making sure you are healthy in every way. I had to have a heart stress test done because of my age (41 at the time). It was NOT fun. It was sooo scary, but it just made me feel more assured that everything was going to be ok. |
