Default liquid diet pre-op

After reading all the posts on people who have done the liquid diet pre op and people who have not I am feeling a little confused as to what I should do. My doctor did advise me to exercise at least 4 days per week which I like to think I have kept up with. However, Since I last saw my doctor in May, I have gained 17 lbs. I read how many of you have lost weight pre op and I am concerned about my gaining. My surgery is on December 4 and my doctor has only requested a 2 days liquid diet prep.
My surgeon is 3 hours away from me and I am not able to access him easily for questions so this board has been great. Any how - I have the following questions and would really appreciate any feedback:
  1. Should I be concerned about my gaining and does this make me not a good candidate for the surgery?
  2. Should I start a liquid diet asap?
  3. What kind of liquid diet should I go on?
I addition, I have read that people who have lost weight before surgery have faster weight loss post surgery. Has anyone not lost weight prior and still experienced rapid weight lost afterwards. I am just feeling so confused and I am beating myself up for the weight gain and generally feeling like I have already failed.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

well for me MY surgeon will not give any one a surgery date with out looseing some pre op weight.
MANY reasons...
makes your liver less fatty and in the way for lap surgery.
my surgeon also feels that it reduces complication rates.

BUT with all that sad im thankful cause i would have gained in that
pre op clearance stage and just have more to loose afterwards.
BUT just do as your surgeon says
and all will be fine.
I didnt have to do the liquid diet pre op...
just that citrate drink the night before to
clean me out which was icky!

good luck
hugs

I would say it is all dependent on your surgeon, maybe you could call his office and ask him your questions... from what i have seen on this site, there seems to be a lot of difference and prefrences when it comes to Dr's orders. I would guess it is a case by case basis. What might be ok for you may not be good for someone else, same thing with insurance requirements, some things are probably pretty standard, but i am sure every Dr. has their own pre-op post-op expectations.
If you are really confused, call you surgeon. And of course let us know what he said.

Don't worry about the weight gain, that won't take the surgery away from you.
Since your surgeon requested only a 2 day liquid diet prior to surgery, that's fine.
However, one bit of advice. Don't go into the last supper syndrome--"I'm not going to be able to eat post op so I want to eat everything I want now, and eat 'em as much as I can, now." Try to set up good eating habits now. Protein first, getting in lots of water, eating in moderation (choose the amount you will eat with one meal before hand, and fill your plate with that, and DO NOT go for second and third helpings) and setting up an easy exercise routine that you can continue post op while your physical activities are still limited.

thanks Doc
I have been very active and ride my bike to work every day (weather permitting) which is a ~19km round trip. I did not think that I was being that terrible with my eating but when you put in the "last supper syndrome" I have to admit that I have fallen into that somewhat. Thanks for your continual support

I had to do the liquid diet for 2 weeks, but mine differed from others since I was allowed to eat a low carb/low fat/high protein meal for dinner. I did alot of salad with meat in it. And lived off of Wonton Broth.

I just spoke with my surgeon and he indicated that everything is ok. He does not recommend any liquid diet nor diet restrictons at this point. I feel so much better. Thanks to all who helped me through my panic yesterday

Well first, you haven't failed anything! You have taken the first steps to a whole new you. If you've read the posts you see that every doctor is different in what they recommend. I know that once I learned I was going to get the surgery I let myself "go" and ate everything in site! I had LOTS of "last meals" (last chinese, last sushi, last pasta, last steak) OMG I could go on and on -- but it all ended up around my middle and I topped the scales at 283 before starting my liquid pre op diet. I had to do it for two weeks before my surgery date. I lost only 9 pounds on the liquid diet so it for me it wasn't about the weight loss necessarily, but getting prepared for a whole new way of dealing with food. It helped prepare me mentally and of course, this place has been just the best thing ever! All the support and wisdom on this forum from everyone has made the biggest difference! Its always best to follow what your doctor recommends, but if you want to test yourself, then try starting a liquid diet ahead of time. For me, the liquid diet was just that -- anything liquid -- it was calorie restricted, so I ate a lot of pureed soups and just blended in protein to make sure I was getting enough. I also had protein shakes, soda, jello, popsicles, etc... Whatever you do decide to do -- remember that you are doing this for yourself and you are the most important person! You'll do great whatever you decide.
