My insurance requires a care-managed preoperative program in which one must lose 5% of their weight. I know at one time it had to be over a 6-month period, but now I think it is as soon as you lose that 5%, you have all your other criteria met, and you prove to them that you are ready.
They also want a 2-year committment to follow up with their case-managed postoperative program.
I don't have a problem with it. It is not an inexpensive surgery and if they are going to invest in me by paying for it, I want to show them that I am committed and have as healthy of a postoperative course as I can so they can know that they have invested wisely. Besides, it makes it easier on me, supposedly, and easier for the surgeon, so it is a win/win/win situation all the way around.
