Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi everyone, I haven't been to the board for over two weeks for a number of reasons. Let me explain the chain of events. Monday, December 3rd I had gone to the hemotologist for my consult to make sure it was ok for me to have the surgery (this was requested by my surgeon since I had recently been taken off of Coumadin). He had no issues with me getting the surgery so he stated he would sign off on my surgery after he got my results in about two weeks and he would write the letter at our next visit on December 31st. Tuesday, December 4th, I woke up as usual went to the bathroom and when I went to stand up, I was in sooo much pain. I thought it was just the way I had been sitting and had strained my calf muscle and didn't worry about it. I popped Tylenol all day and night and the pain just didn't stop. Wednesday, December 5th, I woke up earlier then usual and was in excrutiating pain. I called off of work and went back to bed as much as I could with the pain. Later that morning I woke up and sent my sister an IM letting her know I was afraid it was more than a strained muscle and feared it was another blood clot (I had two blood clots in May 2006 that broke off and traveled to my right lung...almost died.). I told her if the pain didn't stop before late in the afternoon I would be going to the hospital. But I couldn't take the pain anymore and at 12 I went to the hospital. Because of my previous DVT and PE (pulmonary emboli) they ordered an ultrasound of my right calf. The technician had issues while performing the ultrasound and had to call in another person. She was right about her suspicions....there was more then 1 clot, there were two. I was admitted that night and spent a whole week in the hospital. Because of the PE from last spring and the fact that I was never therapeutic on the Coumadin, they inserted a filter so none of the clots could travel to my lungs or heart. They still placed me on 15mg of Coumadin at bedtime and 200mg (I think that's correct) shots of Lovenox each morning. While I was in the hospital, I got my approval for surgery which was scheduled for January 20th (YIPEE), but it has now been postponed. ![]() All of my doctors talked with my surgeon and my hemotologist during my hospital stay and my surgeon wants to postpone my surgery for 3 months, but the hemotologist only wants the filter in and me on the anticoagulants and wants the surgery not delayed (thank God he understands the pain I am in because of my weight). The doctor who worked my case felt the same, postpone it for a month but not any longer. Anyway...I am kind of bummed because I couldn't believe I got the approval and a date while this mess was going on. The surgeon called yesterday and she wants to stick to the 3 months or whatever my hemotologist says when I go to see him on the 31st. Safety first, I know...but 3 months is a long time to wait for something I have been fighting for, for years. I will keep you all updated about my appt on the 31st. I will definitely have Dr. C (the hemotologist) call Dr. P (the surgeon) after my appointment since the decision is up to him as she advised me yesterday when she called to check on me. Also, I do not have sleep apnea...WOOT WOOT! Any advice? I am kinda sad at this point, but will wait it out until my hemotologist makes his decision on a week. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | wow im sorry you are going thru all of this BUT kind of glad it happend now as opposed to a clottin gissue post op. i would assume its dangerous. forgive my ignorance i am not educated in this at all. dont be sad. it sounds like you are on the right track with having all of the dr's in the loop. let them do what they have to and wait as long as you have to for it to be the least bit safer. things happen for a reason. i know its hard to see now but when its all said and done you will understand. we are all here pulling for you. keep us updated |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I am sorry for what had happened to you so close to the bypass. But I all to well know about blood clots I had one in my leg over 2 years ago. They are very painful and then I was on blood thinners a little over 4 months. They told me to be careful not to cut myself, well I cut myself with a steak knife that was laying in the sink and that little cut bleed for a long time. Boy after that I was careful. But it is better to wait with the surgery until everything is ok with you. Just to be on the safe side. The surgery will be here before you know it. You take care of yourself.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I am very sorry to hear of your experience. If it offers you any encouragement, I had to wait a period of 3 months as well for different circumstances after I was approved and had a date. Really the time does go by very quickly. Much rather have you ready to go rather than in a mess later! |

| Super Moderator | ((((((HUGS)))))) 3 month may sound long, but after the fact, I think you will find that they few by. Besides, you have your drs all backing you up and supporting you, so you'd do best with whatever the drs advice you to. Better be safe than sorry, and elective surgeries should be safe. ((((((HUGS)))))

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | What a bummer - thank goodness this didnt occur during or immediately post op and cause other major complications! It's got to be really tough to go thru now, but like the others said, in a few months this will all be just a memory and you'll be thankful they took such good care of you! Hope you have a really good Christmas and that your new year is full of all the things you are hoping for. |
