Default Waiting for the date, getting discouraged!

Hi, please help me feel better! I started this journey back in October, hoping to have surgery in Dec. 07 - Of course, I didn't realize all of the steps involved with all of the doctor appointments and nutritionists, and other surgeries scheduled, so found out it was impossible to do this in December. Okay, figured, by January, then found out from the doctors insurance medical staff that it would probably be Feb. 15th, and that it was approved. Now, when I talked to their scheduling, I find out that he only does gastric bypass on Mondays, and the soonest I could get in would be March 3. They will confirm by mail and as soon as I see the date in writing then I can make my pre op appointment and start my 2 week pre surgery diet. I have been going crazy, trying to plan my time off from work, thinking about this pre surgery diet, getting a little nervous of the actually surgery (never had surgery before), and hearing of all of the things that the nurse's expect you to do right after surgery, I know they know what they are doing, and I know that if I listen then I shouldn't have any problems, but I plan on it sooner, then worry, and then hear it's another date, and just want it done now. I guess I expected it sooner and this waiting is making me go crazy!
on all of your pre op surgery's, is the diet 2 shakes, 1 healthy choice meal, or a lean sandwhich, and 64 oz of water?
post op, do they require you to walk 25 feet every hour, even at night while in the hospital?
when you went home did you have to give yourself shots with blood thinner to prevent clotting for 6 days?
if my doctor can do the laproscopic like I prefer, how long do you think I'd be home from work, if I don't have any complications? My employment is in the office, I sit most of the day.
thank you all for your help.
oh, by the way, how do I get a ticker?
thanks

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Regina!
Wow! Sounds like some trip!! I understand how you feel...waiting...waiting....
Oh and to get a ticker, go to tickerfactory.com and you can make one from there, also, if you fill your profile stats weight etc out, then you will get the site one as well.

Good Luck!

Hi Regina, Poor thing, you sound so lost. This is such a confusing journey!! I had to give myself shots for 2 weeks. you can't even hardly feel them, it's easier than you think.I hope you get lap.surg.It makes it so much easier. Everyone is diff. about going back to work. I was 4 wks by choice. You are so tired for awhile.I took over a year to get approved, was denied twice. I think it's all normal.Just keep asking us questions or just talk, everyone here is great!!Hang in there..

Hi Regina,
I'm sorry they keep changing the dates on you, it does make it very hard to schedule your time off. It seems like they don't understand and it gets so frustrating.

I didn't have to do the pre diet or the blood thinner shots after so I can't answer those. I did get up and walk four times the day after the surgery - as soon as they got me a pole for all my "attachments". The nurses got me up the first time then I just took off when I felt like it the other times. But I never saw my roommate get up at all so I don't think they enforce the rule. I know they were pretty surprised at how much I walked on my own.

I doubt they want you walking at night - sleep is very important to healing - but if they want you to get up then do what they ask. Every surgeon has his own rules and it's best to follow what your surgeon says. It can get very confusing and frustrating listening to all of us who all seem to have different rules.

I chose to be off work for 4 weeks after seeing what a lot of people said on this forum. I was only in pain for about a week, but I was totally exhausted for 4 weeks. I love to read or browse the internet and I was amazed that I couldn't stand to sit up in a chair that long to do those things. I stayed in my recliner and watched old movies on TV and napped a lot! Plan on being wiped out for at least 4 - 5 weeks.

Good luck on your journey. March will be here soon.

it can be really frustrating waiting for it to come, i started my journey in january of 2007 and didnt have surgery untill august 17 2007, and my date was pushed back a couple times due to having H pylori. it really can get discouraging, when mine got pushed back i cried, but ya know the time actually did fly by and i feel it gave me more time to prepare myself exp. mentally, it will be here before you know it!! as far as taking time off work, everyone is different with recovery, i took 2 weeks off work which was perfect for me. good luck in your journey and keep us posted

Hopefully my date won't get changed, but hopefully neither will yours anymore!!!! I have 2 weeks off of work right now and I'm an OR nurse (asked the doc his opinion because he obviously knows exactly what I do and he said 7-10 days. I have 13 off with weekends). I'm hoping that if I'm not quite feeling up to snuff that they'll just let me admit patients instead of the whole she-bang. I have no more paid time off and what I have won't even cover the days I have off. My pre-op liquid diet is 5 medifast shakes a day-no food-and it's for almost 6 weeks. I don't know yet about shots, but we'll see. So hopefully all will go well. Keep us posted!

Thank you all so much, yes it is discouraging, but i'm hanging in there. They said I should wait for a letter telling me the surgery date. Every night coming home from work, I check the mail, like a kid waiting on a gift! I know it will come soon. It will also give me a little more time to catch up on bills, etc. Keep in contact with me. We can be on this journey together. thanks,

For the pic you go to your profile and click on 'edit avatar'. It will let you search your own computer for a pic you like.
The whole 'whipper snapper' thing I think depends on how many posts you have. Every so often I notice that the words above my pic have changed, but I don't know the threshold numbers as to when they'll change or to what. Just keep posting! It'll change.
