Default New here... I have to vent to someone who would understand.

Hi everyone,
After 3 years and lots of attempts, I finally have my approval for Gastric Bypass surgery. I am very excited to start my new life and am nervous as well. I have told my mother and my husband about the surgery of course, but have kept it low key over the past years. I finally began telling a few people that I will by having the surgery next month. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEIR RESPONSE!! I thought everyone would be supportive but this is what I hear over and over....

" How can you qualify for the surgery? You're not big enough", you really should think about what you are doing, this surgery is for really heavy people"

Ok, I am 5'6, 255lbs with a 41bmi. I am over 100lbs overweight. How can this not be "fat enough"???? What is big enough??? I just don't understand how people can consider me "not fat enough", would they like to see me naked??? I am discrimated against in job interviews, I am embarassed when I have to try and "fit" into chairs, planes, etc. And I have literally sat in 3 chairs and broken them in public. Not to mention that I only look in the mirror at my face, the sight of my body makes me cry. I can't believe that now I am discriminated against because I'm not "big" enough to take this step.

Am I crazy???? So, I've decided to get this private and only tell a few people who I know will be supportive of my choice. I AM SO LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN THIS CHANCE AND TO GET INSURANCE APPROVAL. I am grateful that I will soon have a new me.

I go next Friday for my final weigh in, I had to loose 10lbs prior to surgery and I'll get my surgery date.

Thanks for reading this far, I know its a book... sorry.

Tami

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome!! Wow, there lots of new people and it's great! I look forward to reading your posts and going on this journey with you guys (my surgery is soon).
I'm sorry that I can't give too much advice on the negative comments because I have had nothing but good wishes (but I am 5'3" and started at 286 lbs with a BMI of 50). I really don't know why people have to be so judgemental. They criticize you for being bigger and then criticize when you try to be healthier. It's a no win situation, but just do what you're doing and stick with those who support you (including all of us!) and you'll do great!!!
P.S. You can tell those who did have negative comments that ins. wouldn't approve it if you didn't qualify and meet the strict requirements.

Tami these things are all normal. I didnt tell may people ahead of time. I didnt want to hear peoples opinons and what not. Like kenay says, I tell alot of people now or anyone who will listen. I am proud of the fact that I had the surgery and changed my life for the better.
Congrats on getting approved and welcome aboard to this great site.

I'm in the same situation, 100 pounds overweight and a BMI of 40. I hear it all the time too and I just take it that they are trying to compliment me by saying I didn't look "that fat". I tell them I barely qualified for the surgery but I'm so glad I did and then they usually want to hear all the details and how much I've lost. Try to understand that most of them mean well when they say it.

Hi! I too have been getting those kinds of comments. I know they mean well as this is rather a drastic step, but for those of us on this Path, it is a much needed tool to be healthy.
I got rung up today from the surgeons office to be told that they can bring my appts forward a month (early feb instead of early mar), and I just told someone, was really excited, and she said to me, 'I dont know if thats a good thing or not', so I told her that yes, it is a good thing, then she said 'well, thats great then'. Some people just dont know what to say. They also dont know much about the surgery or what the after life entails, so they worry.
Ignore those kinds of comments, and if you cant, just take it as them being genuine.
