Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I thought I should post my experience for those who will be going into surgery so they will know how important it is to ask what meds they are giving you while in the hospital.... After surgery, my potassium was low so my surgeon ordered IV potassium because I was too nauseous to sip anything. The nurse who hung the 1'st bag told me I would be getting 2 bags total, which I did get during the 1'st and 3'rd shifts the day after surgery. On the 2'nd day after surgery I stopped another nurse from hanging a 3'rd bag of potassium. Today I was telling my sister about it (she's a RN) and she said that the 3'rd bag could have overdosed me and put me into cardiac arrest. I never knew, I just didn't want anymore of it because it burned in the IV. Thank God I asked what she was giving me.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Scary, isn't it? I'm a RN, but not a floor RN. Our hospital now requires the patients' name band to be 'scanned' with something like a hand held check out thing before they can give them their medications. Thank god you were paying attention!!!!!!!

| Super Moderator | Yikes Yes, too high a concentration of potassium in IV drips burn your vein, just as some other too high concentration meds to. Potassium overdose is really scary. Good thing you were attentive.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Yes for sure and make sure they put your potassium on a pump - I didn't notice mine wasn't on a pump until the morning after surgery as they were taking the iv out. I was also almost given 3 doses of heparin on my day of surgery - I had been told two for the day and as a nurse I counted lol. A nurse came in at 11pm to give me the 3rd dose and I asked. I felt greatful I was alert enough to ask. Judy

| I have had Nurses try to give me maintenance meds on top of maintenance meds for my asthma. Give me my advair and then try to hit me up with something like flovent or combivent. And I am due for a regular treatment from respiratory. Or they have me on iv injectable steroids and tried to give me oral as well that happened about ten years ago.. I try hard to keep my eye on what they are giving me.. I didnt know about potassium being poss fatal so I will deff keep my eye on that one..
