I didn't get alot of grief, but I did have friends who were against it from the start; they warned me about things like the "big head syndrome" and all the dangers of the surgery, etc...but now that I've had the surgery and I'm losing weight and feeling better, those who were against it are now more supportive.

Most people I've told have been very encouraging though. As for someone thinking this is the "easy way out"....I can only laugh at that notion... This has been anything but easy.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sorry I missed your post, welcome to this wonderful site. You are in charge of this journey, so, tell those you feel you can get support from. I was so excited I told everyone I knew!! Sure I did get the horror stories from those who knew nothing about the procedures and had only heard bad things about the surgery, but I let them know right up front that I had searched out everything before making MY DECISION. Each of us knows the battles we have gone through and what our health issues are if we don't take control of this vicious cycle. I realize not all of us have a strong personality, so if you feel more confortable talking only to those that truly matter in your life and who are going to give you support, I suggest you start there. I found the more I said it and talked about it the stronger I felt. Nice having you here with us.

Welcome!

I tell everyone I had gastric bypass. A lot of people want to tell me horror stories they've heard and I just cut them off and say that it's working for me.

From reading what every one has said you are definately making me so excited at the possiblity. I have discussed this with my partner and he is very supportive. I am quite happy with my weight yes a i am a big girl but I think it suits me in a way but then i thinkabout the long term affects it can have on my life especially the fact that I have pco and the thought of having my own child one day will make it all worth while.

Hello and welcome to the boards! This a great group of people. I have learned so much from them!

I personally am telling pretty much everyone. I had a discussion with my manager when I started the journey and she has been so supportive. There are about 10 people in my office and I think that about 8 of them know. They have all been awesome. They are even stocking the office for when I get back after my surgery.

I even told the lady who cut my hair for the first time last week. Come to find out her sister is going to do it next year.

So far, I have been lucky, no one has told me any horror stories...they have just been hugely supportive.

What you decide to tell people is up to you. Each of us is on our own journey and path. Good luck to you as you go through yours.

Hugs,
Ella

Welcome to this "great site". People have only been soooo supportive and nurturing! As for my response, please tell only those whom you trust...then again, I trusted a close friend..only to find out that she isn't totally supportive and has undermined me. We were "fat friends" who always took comfort in going out and eating comfort foods together...we used to criticize those "perfect" skinnies and their weight obsessions. Now though, we don't share those same ideals...so she "blabbed out my WLS...to many associates.

New inquiries on my weight loss, I tell them that I'm trying to lose weight by choice. If they ask further...I tell them that I am on a medical diet. done.

feel confident that this is a right choice to a better future!!
