| understanding my gastric bypass surgery I just got
My surgery was 8/27/09 Isn't the idea of getting this surgery not to be hungry because of what they do to your insides? I had the gastric bypass surgery via laproscopic, I am on my first week of liquids and taking water in between. all complication are gone and i feel great. But, I am really hungry I am taking in a lot of liquids and water in between. I thought the surgery was to prevent you from feeling hungry so why am i so hungry, i am ready for a cheeseburger, i am litterally starving. did anyone else feel this way. i need solids.. also your first week of surgery can you tell me what kind of vitamins u r taking?
help

no ma'am. the point of the surgery is not to take the hunger away. its to restrict the size of what you can eat and how much if it your body will absorb for a time period. that time period allows you to learn better ways to handle the reasons why you ate in excess to begin with, while learning new healthier ways to eat. the surgery WILL NOT prevent you from feeling hungry. you need to figure out why you feel hungry (which is probably not getting in enough fluids). this doesnt fix everything over night. you have to give this time. it is a HUGE adjustment.
the hunger is in your head. it stops after a while. hang in there. get some sugar free popsicles or ice chips if you feel like you need to chew something.
most of us were either on chewable vitamins or liquid vitamins immediately post op. you have to ask your surgeon what he thinks is an acceptable vitamin and when you can start taking it.

I agree with Kenya. You need to figure out why you think you're hungry & find an alternative to eating when you get head hunger. Walking is a gret way to get past the urge. I am two weeks out. Two days after surgery I went on Centrum chewables 3 times per day. After I week I couldn't stomach them at all. Now I take Celebrate capsules & will stick with those to about 6 months then just a good multi vitamin. I also take B12 liquid sublingual, an iron tablet, & calcium. Good luck.

| Hello and congrats on your new life!! I am going to tell you something that I hope helps you. After my surgery when I came home I had the hardest time with my "hunger pains". I fought for what seemed like forever with my head hunger, your head doesn't know that your stomach is the size of an egg, your mind wants you to go out and get that number 5 at your favorite fast food drive-thru. You will have to find a way to keep your mind occupied, take a walk, go to a friends house, color, paint, draw, read a book, ect... but I would see commercials on tv and say "i want that" so I can totally understand what you are going through, but you can do it!!!! You are a strong person because you made the choice to change the rest of your life! You have a new lease on life!!! THATS FANTASTIC!! YOUR A WINNER ALREADY AND YOU CAN DO THIS! I can tell you that 4 days after surgery I called my nut and told them "im hungry" i still feel hungry even after I drank my liquids and my broth and my nut told me "well, if you still feel hungry and your not tossing your cookies and going potty you can move to the next stage" BUT THAT IS WHAT MY NUT TOLD ME EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. I havent had any problems and I know that you wont either, it wont hurt to call and ask. I wish you the best of luck!!! Texxaslim

unless you are drinking 64 ozs of fluid per day, you are not drinking enough fluids.
centrum has a chewable that is for adults.
fluids run thru the pouch so no, it wont stay full.
be careful with the apple juice, eventhough it is diluted it contains sugar.

Hang in there. It really is head hunger. It does get better with time. You will have to remind yourself to eat in a few weeks. When you can have food that you have to chew and chew and chew you will be more satisfied. It gets easier I promise.

Hang in there. It does get better. I had my procedure on the 13th and there were some rough days.
I just moved to my next stage of meals and everyone is definitely different. I was on the clear liquid portion for two weeks. I did not have any vitamins during this time - strictly liquid. So, I felt "hungry" by the time the two weeks had passed.
My Dr. moved me to the next stage and it is no longer an issue. I am back to having difficulty fitting all of the fluids and food in. He also had me jump from liquids to a day or two of puree and on to "regular" food with no meat.
So, basically I was on liquids longer than some and was able to move on to "regular" food sooner than others. I began taking vitamins at the new stage. So definitely call your Dr. and ask about introducing new options.
As they've said everyone is different.
Have a good one.
Renee

| A more than "fitting Title: Understanding my Gastric Bypass Surgery
Lisa,
Welcome to emotions and understanding our body and its signals for hunger 101. By now, you have had enough comments with people telling you that no, the surgery worked on your Stomach and not on your head"(Unless you had some new fangled surgery were they cut into your brain and adjusted the portion that controls hunger, you had the same surgery as most of us.
Your "diet" for these initial few weeks are meant to not disturb your pouch and insides while they are healing. Most surgical programs do some sort of liquid or restriced diet prior to the actual surgery to get you and your body accustomed to the smaller portions that will be the eating style for the rest of your life.
The head can really play havoc controlling how much we eat or want to eat- that is why most of us end up getting this surgery- looking to learn how to limit the amount we eat and paying attention to why we eat. The first stage you are on is not meant to "fill" you up- More important to keep your body hydrated and avoid other problems. My suggestion is if it isnt a time for some meal, look for something else to do- look at a catalogue of new clothes you are hoping to be able to purchase soon with yoru new slimmer figure. or go take a walk and enjoy what days of Spring?Fall we have left. Try to do things that keep your mind off food. These skills will become very usefull when you move up to more solid type of eating. Start paying attention when your stomach "feels" full(not just wen your head thinks it is full.) Start paying attention to how your body reacts to different types of food- WHen you eat the applesauce, do you eat each spoonful slowly,("chewing" 20 times each bite?(I know, hard to do)Another training method to slow down those who eat quickly to taste the food,.
REalize that it is a learning process. You will grasp it- Some people have no problems an dbreeze right thru- others have food dificulties and need to find other food choices . I wish you well, If you have any question, please feel free to text. It does get better and I promise, this is not a starvation diet, It will all make sence soon.. Amy H
