| Straws & Bottles with gastric bypass
Hey everyone I went to a seminar with people who had the same (Gastric Bypass) procedure done as me, some say they are NOT ALLOWED EVER to drink from straws or any kind of bottles, including water bottles, due to that it will give you gas. My surgeron or nutrionist did not say anything about this. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and I am just curious since my surgeon does not come back into the office until Wed..
Any replies would be appreciated...
Thanks Lisa

Some water bottles are designed so you ingest a lot of air with the water, especially the kind with the spout you pull up and sip from. The main problem is swallowing air with the water, which can lead at a minimum to a horrendous amount of embarrassing belching. Some stomach pain has also been experienced by folks here.
Don't even mess with it for the first 6-9 months. Then experiment cautiously if you must. I've used a straw probably less than a dozen times since RNY, but I'll take a pull from a water bottle with no problems.

I have never heard this and I am 12 days post op. I have been drinking from a straw all day because I tend to drink more that way. I feel fine and have a little burping but nothing more. I will have to ask my Nut about this. Thanks for the info.

The reason for no straws is because you can drink quite a few calories before you realize it. So giving up a straw is to help you avoid drinking something down fast that is full of calories.

Well I only drank through a straw for the first month after surgery, as it helped me to sip and not to gulp, and i didn't have any trouble with burping?? Perhaps its a case of what works for some and not for others???

Well ask and do as they say. I wouldnt dare drink from a straw because of my previous expericne with it and the air. I knew what would happen. On my daily ticket that would come with my MEAL LOL in the hosptial would have in red NO STRAW. Its because of the air.
I have always done a water bottle. CT is correct in stating about the type with the cap. You wouldnt think you would get air in like that but it gulps it in acutaly.
So I would ask the surgeon and do as he states

At my nutrition class we were told no straws for the first year due to air intake. We were cautioned about the pull up top type bottles. Since day 1 I have drank from a regular water bottle with no problems. Since I do not want to borrow trouble I won't use a straw yet (exception: I had a sugar free slurpee & used a straw.)
