| Does anyone wish they had the lap band instead of the RNY?
I am meeting with my surgeon this week and I have been pretty set that if he agrees I want to go with the rny, but with the number of lap bands being done, I was wondering if anyone that had the bypass wishes they had gone the way of the lap band.
From what I understand, the surgeon I am going to leaves it up to the patient unless there is a reason that one would be better than the other one.

Nope! My surgeon convinced me that RNY was the right approach, and I have never had any reason to doubt it. I do not believe I would have had nearly as good results with the band.

My advise to you would be to talk with your surgeon and ask questions..I mean ask everything that comes to mind ,and weigh everything carefully.
My original plan was the lap-band. The surgeon thought that rny was my best option because of my health issues, and that he believed that those issues would be resolved more effectively. However he told me that it was completely up to me, and he would perform either surgery. I made the choice for rny, and I'm pretty okay with it right now.

Hello and welcome. I started this journey wanting the lap band. I changed my mind after having two surgeons tell me that my best choice would be R N Y. That is what I had and I have never regretted it. Read and research both and I know you will make the right choice. Good luck what ever you choose.

I started out wanting the Lap Band, and after my first ten minutes into my first seminar I decided that RNY was right for me. With the Lap Band it is to easy to cheat and have no problem with it. With RNY if you cheat you will probably dump and will never want to cheat again, just knowing that I have never put anything in my mouth that is not healthy. I have had great results with RNY and have never regretted it!

Nope! The band didn't even cross my mind. Slower weight loss and WAAAAAAAAAY more will power/self control involved. I have neither of those! RNY was definitely the smart choice for me. It really all depends on you, your needs, your surgeons suggestions and your attitude! Good luck!

I was on the fence between the two procedures. At first I felt that RNY was too drastic, permanent and a commitment I was unsure of. My surgeon and I had several long conversations about both and I did some soul searching on my eating behaviors. After taking a long look at me I decided that rny was the appropriate choice for me. I don't think that I would have had the same results with the band. I am proud of myself for the changes I have made in my lifestyle and the quality of life I have gained through wls and have no regrets.

Your surgeon "may leave it up to the patient" but with your insurance is either/or an option. A lot of insurances NOW will pay for the Lapband but not the RNY or the other way around.
When I had mine 8 yrs ago this may? Lapband was NOT even an option. RNY was IT. The only option was having it done either lap IF you could find a doc who did it that way, OR getting it done open. Mine was OPEN RNY and I went with a doc who specialized in the super heavyweights and only did OPEN.
Do I wish I'd been able to have that choice? NAH..I know a lot of lap banders now here in OKC and they work really hard to keep that weight off through 'diet' management and fills and working out.
I like that the RNY has for ME a built in monitor if you will about certain foods. So the compliance issue isn't one that would possibly have been an issue with me if I'd had the lapband.
Plus I am very happy with where the RNY took me and allowed me to be able to take with my body through workouts!!! Check out my pictures in the profile if you want to see what I mean. I still need to add pics from my older iPod if I can figure out how to move them off there!

Don't forget there is another option, the gastric sleeve. More and more insurance companies are approving it. One thing I have noticed is the number of lapband revisions that are happening.

Well, I haven't had anything done yet. Still waiting on an approval from insurance. But, I made my choice to be RNY and I am not regretting it. I initially thought I wanted Lap-band, but my research has taken me down a different path. My surgeon too was one of those that would not 'tell' me what to do, but wanted me to choose based on me educating myself. I am glad I did that way, and as it now turns out, am making the better choice for myself. See, on the way to surgery, they discovered another condition with me which actually makes RNY a better choice for me. So, without even knowing it when I did it, I made a good choice. Now, just eagerly awaiting approval & surgery date.
Nancy
