| What did I do to myself?
I posted this as the title, as I read it was one of the "Stages" of WLS. And I am really wondering that today. ( 2 days post op). What on God's green planet have I done to myself?
I have not felt any hunger what-so-ever and don;t even want to SMELL anything that resembles food. The pain is awful, even taking the liquid hydrocodone. I struggle to get the recommended "Liquid diet" they sent me home with.
I've had a hysterectomy, and other surgery, but this one is the worst. Just the SMELL of food makes me nauseous. I had to come sit in in another room while the rest of the family ate dinner cause I thought I was going to be ill.
Is there something wrong with me? I read all these stories of people who have little pain and I feel as though two giant goons are beating on my stomach constantly.
I couldn't even imagine doing cream of wheat and stuff, my surgeon won't allow them until after the 1 week follow up. Maybe when I progress to regular foods I'll feel better.
Walking around like a little old lady holding her belly in is no fun. Even though I kinda am a little old lady. LOL.
Please reassure me, that others out there had some of this kind of pain when they went through this? I only hear about these people who "pop up and are ready to run around" after 2 days while I need to crawl into bed every 3 hours!! (And yes, I am sure being 47 instead of 27 has a lot to do with it. But I would consider myself pretty "Pain tolerant" )
Warmly,
Jackie

| OMG I had the surgery from HELL ! In hospital 8 days , throwing up all the time, they took me off of everything even and sent me home with me having a popsicle only ...it took me months to get over the smell of food and wanting to ...your not alone hun ! Up until my 5th month I never thought any food would taste like what I remembered...heck Ic ouldnt keep that much down until then either..it was ugly but was it worth it, yes ! I got off of all my insulin and diabetes meds, not to mention numerous others...I did it for health not for vanity, but I am starting to enjoy the vanity side also ...you will not have so much pain in a few more days i bet..heck I was in bed for a couple months other than up to eat walk a lil and right back to bed..3rd and 4th month were not a whole lot better , my body just needed rest, I had a staph infection when i got home and then once it got cleared up I had urninary infection...it seemed like never ending, and I did get meds for nausea for all those months , so do call the dr and get some, I dont think i would made it without them...this to shall pass hun, sometimes i would hide my head in the way back bedroom under the sheets to not smell the food lol...its so much better now..I dont understand why some of us go thru this, but have faith Annie~ Oh and welcome to the losers bench , not sure I got that signed on your post , hugs !

I remember that feeling the second day after surgery. What in the h*** have I done to myself. It didnt take me but a few day to start feeling human again and it just got better from there. The first couple of weeks was the toughest for me. After that it just kept getting better. I now look at my surgery as life saving and I am so happy I did it. Hang in there you will feel better soon. I think some time that people forget those bad times they went through right after surgery. I guess it is like having a baby, you forget the pain and enjoy your new bundle of joy. lol Good luck and just remember it will get better with time. Sip sip walk walk and rest rest.

Same here, you are NORMAL!!!! i wanted to sleep all the time, my husband had to cook for the kids cause I didnt even want to look at it, poor babies had hamburger helper for almost 2 weeks straight! I would start on a no cal, fat free ect.. ice pop and couldnt even stomach finishing it. Give your self time, body is still trying to figure out what just happened to it.

Hello Jackie: I felt the same exact way. Imagine my surprise too when I was also told when I woke up that they had to finish my surgery open as they had to go back in after the normal 2 hour surgery and repair a "Kink" that developed when they went to hook things back up down below. I was in surgery for 6 hours instead of 2 hours. I could not sleep in my bed for about 3 weeks either, (Slept in a recyliner), and I was in constant pain. I could barely walk for the first week. When I finally did try sleeping in my bed again, I found that I had to use a body pillow. It really helped a lot. I also found sugar free popsicles and chicken broth (Bullion cubes) to be the first things that I really enjoyed. It will get better, a little better each day. Just follow your surgeon's instructions and do your walking and try to drink your fluids and you will be fine. To this day, I swear I'm still not sure that I would ever recommend this surgery to anyone due to the pain that I went through. I guess after a certain amount of time passes, we do tend to forget how much pain we experienced though. At some point, I guess the good might outweigh the bad. We shall see - I'm not there yet. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for you!

Jackie... I remember the pain.... but it got better quickly... Its funny when I left the hospital I felt pretty good, but once I got home the pain was pretty bad for a few days (mostly gas issues from the anesthia) It was horrible, but I forced myself to walk and when I didnt want "eat"... I drank plain chicken broth or protein shakes.... it may be hard to find a flavor that doesn't make you sick at first....
Nobody has exactly the same experience, but most of the people I talk to... myself included feel the WLS was the best thing they have done for themselves...
Try to keep your head up... I wish you the best!

Sorry you are feeling this way. Most here will agree that once you get past the first few days (and in some cases weeks or months) things are SO much better. I was lucky and didn't experience too much pain (this was my first surgery) and I haven't had any complications. Most of who I have read about on here, even those who had complications, still were happy they had the surgery. I started at the same weight as you and it looks like we have the same goal as well. I will tell you, for me (7 months out) I only wish I had done this sooner.
Good Luck, hope you are feeling better soon!!!

Aw (((HUGS))) The first week is tough, and your body's reaction and thoughts are totally normal. After all, you had major surgery, and your digestive route has been rearranged almost totally.
Hang in there, take things one day at a time, one day done is one day closer to goal.
