| New and could use all the advice I could get!
Hey Everyone!
My name is Steph and I am new to this forum! I have a consult with my surgeon on Jan 31st and I'm very excited but also very nervous! I have decided after much thought and research that RNY is the way for me to go. If anyone who has been through the surgery can give me all the advice you can it would be so helpful. What do you know that you would have wanted to know before going through the surgery and how long post op are you?
Thanks much!
Steph

I am new to the site also. I had my surgery on Jan. 6, 2012. Just 16 days ago. Everyone here has been such a great help. Lots to read, lots to learn. The one thing I am learning that it is a full time job learning and applying the new eating habits. Get all your medications and your nutrition for the next couple of weeks after surgery so you can heal rather than needing to go shopping and stressing if you have the right things at home.
Good Luck.

I'm 10 weeks post op and my best advice is to try to change the habits that made you fat to begin with before your surgery so the surgery is merely a reenforcement tool that keeps you in check. Portion size was my biggest stumblesng block and now I'm forced to keep that in check but wish I had started exercising and exerting portion control over my portions sooner and "thinking thin" so that the forced portion control would not have seemed so harsh. I dont know if that makes sense. I guess I just mean the surgery is a tool and you are the answer. The surgery cant fix your head. Lol i wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading more posts!

And not to share too much, but I just farted and my girlfriend said "you need to put on there that she should stock up on beano. It's the courteous thing to do. Warn her, Claire. You just have to.". So there you have it. If you live with anyone, stock up on beano. "it's the courteous thing to do". Lol

Steffie: Hi, you will be great. It is a scary process. But I am almost 5 months out and just over 70 lbs lost. That is 7 - 10 lb bags of potatoes. Yes, I like to visualize and I have even picked up several at the grocery store to motivate and to remember. Now, I can't even imagine how in the world I could plaster that many "taters" all over my body and how in the world I lugged those around ALL DAY LONG...EVERYDAY...WEEK AFTER WEEK! Go grab you some at the store and think about it. Think of your joints and your heart!
I was the worlds biggest scaridy cat but I made the right decision, held my breath and did it. It was the best thing I have done. (I don't have kids) but I would liken it to that now...it wasn't comfortable but I am so happy.
I did not take much to the hospital. Not much need you will sleep and recover. Take you a home pillow and some chapstick (l like Burt's Bee's) and some baby wipes for my hands and nether regions. My husband took off 3 weeks (I was super lucky) to take care of me. I slept on the recliner because I did not like to lay down flat...I notice a lot of people did not like to either. Make sure you walk as much as you can...in spurts and it helps with recovery and with keeping away blood clots after surgery. I was thankful for my husband who made me do it even tho I wasn't really happy about it at the time. I had "forced march" at the hospital and even a follow RNY'r made a comment to me that her mother kept telling her she should be walking as much as I am up and down the halls. Wasn't happy but I did it.
I have a hard time with writing stuff down and measuring but I did it for as long as I could...now it comes natural. Sometimes it is hard to "stop" but I don't let myself get full. I don't like the feeling and I am afraid of the stretch. (personal issue of mine)
You will do great. For me it wasn't about looks but about health and being active. I am signing up for a major 5k in July that has an obstacle course. I am excited by it. I am getting back to my active self. Even when I am visiting my step son his new girlfriend signed me up for a kickboxing class. 5 months ago that would not have happened. Just makes me feel good. I am among the "moving"! Can you believe it? And you will be too! It feels great! Good luck.

I am 19 weeks post op & down 79 lbs since surgery. The hardest thing for me has been staying focused while eating so that I don't eat to fast & chew well. If you eat too fast & don't chew well enough, you will pay for it. I get nauseous & stay that way for a minimum of 30 minutes. Also, not drinking while eating is a very hard habit to break...so try your best not to have a beveraage available, because you will inevitably pick it up & drink with out thinking about it. Best of luck to you & if you have any specific questions, just ask!
