Exclamation Question on RNY and removal of stomach - DocSanae et.al

I've been going through the Bariatric Pathway at MAMC (Madigan Medical Army Center) - GENERAL SURGERY

Something that was mentioned during my first visit was that for open RNY (which I'll have because of an umbilical hernia that needs repairing), it's usual to remove the remaining part of the stomach (depending on which surgeon I have).

I'm a little concerned about this because everthing I've read to date states that the remaining portion of the stomach produces digestive fluids that our body needs.

In the rare event that complications arise - worst case scenario - what is left to work with if the patient requires a revision of some kind down the road?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

"WHOA" is right Kenya!

I've been reading of the struggles of at least two people who are having to have revisions - one has her surgery this week.

I've spent 2 months preparing myself for this but I can't continue until I've researched this further - it's frightened the hay out of me.

Thank you again Kenyar.

To me, DocSanae's explaination merely reinforces the necessity of leaving the other part of the stomach behind IN CASE some form of revision is necessary in the future.

Edie - I don't know.

I won't be talking to him/her cause if removing the other portion of the stomach is their preference, then I'm not likely to get an unbiased opinion.

Nope - I need to tool myself up with as much information as I can before I go in there again.

An update.

Someone else has kindly pointed out to me that in reviewing MAMC's website, they appear to some sort of variation of the RNY and the Vertical Gastrectomy with Duodenal Switch.

Well, terrific - wonderful! But I'm still not prepared to give up the other part of my stomach.

So - I called MAMC and spoke with one of the surgeons. He informed me that on one of their docs. remove the remaining portion of the stomach - the others leave it behind.

Needless to say, I made an appointment with one of the "others".

I'm glad I've been dragging my heels on this. I've done all the classes and had the psy.evaluation. I just needed more time to go over everything.

And there lies the problem. I just thought I was having your regular RNY. Patently not.

Now I need to research the actual surgery that MAMC do.
