Post What's the deal...

...with having to stop taking my birth control pills 30 days before surgery and then not take them again 30 days after surgery. I just read my pre-op letter and that is highlighted. I am curious as to the reason, does anyone know???

Thanks a bunch!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

is there anything in them that might affect your ability to clot? or anything that might think your blood? i've never heard of this and to be honest, they wont work post op anyways. i'd be curious to see what doc sanae says about this....

I'm not sure about birth control pills, but I know I had to stop taking any pill that had a diuretic in it, which was my blood pressure pill, so they changed me to a kind that didn't have that in it. Maybe it's that? I'm curious too.

I was told by my surgeon that I had to stop taking birth control pills because of the effects it has on thinning the blood. Besides the fact like Kenya said they won't work post op anyway.

Kenya,
They won't work at all post-op? Is that why so many women are on the patch?? If that is the case, I wonder why my surgeon told me to stay off them only 30 days after surgery? Hmmm, I am going to have to check into this. I would much rather have the patch anyway, but they always told me I was too heavy to take it.

Lots of birth control pills contain progesterone and that does make you more prone to clotting. All the post-op birth control stuff is in another thread and hopefully doc will come on somewhere and talk about it.

Yes, one of the side effects of BC pills is clotting.
Overweight people are often already prone to clotting (I know there's plenty of post ops who had deep vein thrombosis pre op) so another factor to increase the possibility is not good.

As for birth control itself, during the rapid losing stage, HORMONAL control will be ineffictive, so it has to be some other method. This means that patches, not only pills, are INEFFECTIVE because they are hormonal control. You need to rely on a PHYSICAL method during this period.
After your weight stabilizes and you are in maintenance, you can go back to hormonal control--pills, patches, whatever.

My Doc talked me into the IUD I was really scared to do it. it is a non hormonal device that is good for about 5 years no side affects like BC pills and after I had it done I could figure out what my problem was. It's kinda like that info mercial" Set it and forget it" Now that its in I don't have to worry about it for 5 years....and if I want to have kids later on it's an easy trip to the Doc to have it removed.
