Default Vertical During Surgery!?

I have been meaning to ask this since surgery.

Does anyone know why they stand you up during surgery. They told me I would be strapped on the table securely since at some point in the surgery they would put me vertical.

Why?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I saw a pic of such a set up last year. You aren't completely vertical, actually, the angle is about 45 degrees, I think. The surgeon who showed us his set up likes to stand between the feet of his patient, as the surgery area is easier to access that way, rather than having the patient completely horizontal, and having to lean over the patient. Logically speaking, I think it's better for the surgeon's back, too, with the half vertical between the feet position, as that way, the surgeon can stand straight up while performing the surgery, compared to having to bend over with the patient in the horizontal position. Can you imagine what it's like to stand for a couple of hours or more, with your back half bent and leaning forward?

We do the same thing for gallbladder removals. You could never be actually verticle, the table will not do that, but it lets gravity help to keep things out of the way and allow the docs more access to where they're working.

Based upon Doc's comment, this should become a best practice for all surgeons.

Yep Kenya - you are correct!!!! They tilt you downwards so that you are at about 30 or 45 degrees, sometimes even less. This moves the bulk of the intestines downward, leaving things such as the stomach/liver/gallbaldder more exposed... aka... easier access!
And subsequently when they do GYN surgeries, they put you in what's called trendelemberg (head down) at a less severe angle - sometimes only 10 or 20 degrees, and it help moves the intestines upward, therefore helping to expose the ovaries/uterus! In this one they have to be more careful though because then more weight is shifted against the heart and lungs.
Pretty neat!
