Default Ok lets get this straight...

Just wanted to get this down right. Protein is absorbed 30g at a time right? Because another thread said 25? How far apart should a protein drink and a meal be? See, I workout in the afternoon. I thought you should drink your shake after a workout. But then dinner is like an hour or so after I finish the shake..is that spaced out far enough for maximum absorption? I get around 85 g of protein a day, but is all of it counting? Or are we just supposed to shoot for 70g so that our body gets enough, even if all of it isnt absorbing. Oh..and the shake..in the morning first thing..or after the workout in the afternoon? If I drank it in the morning, would it be better for energy, or does it matter?

I ask a lot of questions, I know I know..

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The absorption rate for protein is said to be around 20-30g per meal. The amount will also depend on the length of your bypass, and how far out of surgery you are, as your body will readjust and the rate of absorption will increase after several months post op, and you will recover part of the lost ability to absorb, though how much in rate, there seems to be no clear data.
Liquids are absorbed faster than solids, so, spacing your protein drink and meal one hour apart probably is good enough. You'll need some protein for strength and energy in the morning, then some protein for building up your muscles after exercise.

If you go by medical textbooks, the actual amount of protein needed daily is projected to be 30-50gs, with the recommendation of actual intake being 60-75g to be safe. This takes into account that even with the digestive route intact, the body can let a lot of stuff go to waste. So, if you are worried that you may not be absorbing enough, 70-80g protein is probably fine, but never get it up too high, more than 100g would be too much.

So, the best way of counting on the amount of protein intake would be from the shakes? (as you can obviously work out how much you are taking in) Is that correct? I dont want to rely on meat as from what I can gather, the intake of meat is iffy at best?

Lee lee,

I know that I am getting the bulk of my protein from my shake because it is around 30 grams. I try to do chicken or turkey at dinner, but often in one meal, I am only getting about 12-18 grams in one sitting (on a good day), so the shakes are kind of essential right now..and I split up a 100 cal protein bar..half in the morn and half late afternoon for an additional 10 to 12 grams on some days and/or use those 10 g 50 calorie protein packets and add it to my water bottle. I like the orange mango its so good!
