| Liquid Protein preferred over meats? Hi, It looks like a lot of people choose to get their protein in through liquid/powder's instead of trying to eat meats and other protein sorces?? Can I ask why? I'm pretty new and am having a hard time eating meats so I drink 2 different protein drinks each day. Is this okay to do? What are some of your favorite protein drinks? Flavors? And where do you get them? Thanks! Kim

Just like you, lots of post ops, especially early out, have trouble with meat, especially red meat. So, in order to fulfill the protein quota, they turn to shakes and drinks.
If you can get it through real food, that's the best, but if you can't it's okay to use them.
However, some surgeons do say, its okay in the earlier stages, but one you get past 6 months or so, try to shift completely to fish, poultry, meat, real food, and keep the drinks and shakes for snacks at most. This is because the process of eating and digesting is important, both in maintaining your physical functions, and also in stimulating your brain.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

I'm only about 4 weeks post-op and I just can't eat enough protein and if I eat a whole bunch of small meals to really push it, since you can't drink after you eat, it's impossible for me to anywhere near my liquids in. So I found a great protein source that doesn't make me sick and I put it in a mixture of water and crystal light to get 20 oz. of great tasting juice flavors and 23 g of protein. I use Nectar Syntrax. I JUST found it this weekend. I tried the iced tea, fuzzy navel (peach/orange) and twisted cherry. They're awesome. I was having A LOT of trouble with dairy products and every single protein 'shake' I tried. This is perfect for me because even though it's opaque, it tastes just like juice/crystal light and doesn't bother my tummy. Plus I can't eat in the AM anymore and I rarely get a break at work, so this helps A LOT!!!!!!

I still use protein supplements....or let me say....I keep them around just in case I need a push! My preferred protein source is chicken or fish....I would LOVE a steak, but I'm afraid of it getting stuck.....you only have to get something stuck ONCE before you KNOW you don't want that happening again!

I also drink my protein drinks when I need it to push my protein if I am a little low that day. I also use the protein drink if we are on the go, it is just so easy to grab and go. This way I at least get in my protein. I ate meat pretty early out, when the nutritionist said that I could start to eat meat. When I saw my doctor's assistant at 3 months after surgery, she wanted me to start to eat steaks and porkchops any way I could. She told me that it was so that my stricture stays open. Well I was so scared of steaks and porkchops becasue I had heard of people throwing up becasue it got stuck and did not agree with them. My daughter was almost a year out when she tried steak and she threw up from it twice. So I was sooo scared but I knew I had to try it. So I cut it into tiny pieces and fryed it with lots of onions and wow did I ever do good on steaks and porkchops I just took my time and cut tiny pieces when I ate it. I do very good with meats now except for the canned fishes yet. Just the thought of it gags me. Chicken took me a long time before I could eat that, I got so sick on chicken, turkey early out and just kept trying until it settled in my stomach. But the strangest thing is now that I can eat more foods, I have trouble with plain old hamburger. It just like it does not want to settle in my pouch. Now I can make meatloaf and that does not bother me. Now my sister gave me an idea of how to make my hamburgers becasue I do so well with meatloaf. She told me to put in an egg and a little bit of oatmeal or a cracker or two into my hamburger and that might work for me. So I am going to try that today or tomarrow. She thinks that the meat has to be broken up by some ingredients that I use in my meatloaf becasue I do so well with meatloaf. So it is worth a try.

You're only about 4 weeks post op. You'll rely on protein shakes for the bulk of your protein for a few more months. I'm 22 months out, and I still take about 3-4 protein shakes per week. I try to eat protein at each meal or snack, but I'd rather be sure of meeting the long range protein intake--so I opt for shakes still. Protein from food is preffered, to get bulk through your system and to get your digestive track operating as normal as possible. Make sure you take your vitamins and calcium citrate too.

i do not drink any protein shakes anymore, but i do not have any problems with any meats. i think earlier out the protein shakes are ok or if you have problems with meats, maybe some softer meats would be good to try, like fish??
