Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I know I haven't been around much, but I am still here and guess what? I have not only been approved for my RNY, but have a surgery date of April 15!! ![]() My question isn't so much a question but a "is there any amount of truth to this at all?" My gut tells me no, but I thought maybe Doc Sanae could weigh in on this. I have iGoogle and one of the things I have it set up for is a blog search for gastric bypass. Yesterday, it came up with this article which just infuriated me (as this woman generally does as I've run across her accidently before). She spews out all this stuff but there is nothing there to back it up, but Doc, do you think such places really even exist?? |

| Super Moderator | Hi, longtime no see, glad to hear you are doing well. Congratulations on your date!! As for your Q. You do know that for some people WLS can end up being too much. Deficiencies and ill health can happen, primarily due to not keeping up with vitamins and minerals, and following your surgeon's instructions. Others have underlying health issues that are aggravated by the weight loss, contrary to the fact that a lot of issues that are aggravated by excess weight gets much much better as you lose weight. Some of what she says are misconceptions, like everyone being less than 10 years out. A few papers came out last year with stats for long term follow up, and they were good enough to merit WLS as a good choice for treatment. One paper I checked followed patients that had surgery as far back as 1984, so there are plenty of patients more than ten years out. As a matter of fact, CraigT who hosts this board had his open RNY in 1997. I also put up a thread and some posts a while back on the *numbers game* so check that out. Keep in mind, there will always be people who want to say bad things about whatever, and spew half truths, which is worse than blatant lies, because with lies, you won't be able to find anything, but with half truths and facts twisted round and only things that fit their agenda picked up can be bad because you will find something that seem to subsantiate their arguments, and in this case, the only way you can be sure that that what the person is saying is distorted, is if you yourself know the source of the info. At any rate, just ignore such articles and people, your time is too precious to waste over such things. ((((((HUGS))))))

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I am with Doc, the only thing more dangerous than a blatant lie is a half-truth!!! I was tempted to post a comment on this womans blog but thought better of myself and didnt, Grandma always said "if you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all" and I will just keep my mouth shut.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thank you for the feeback. That woman makes me insane. I shouldn't let her get to me, but it blows my mind why some of the FA (Fat Acceptance) community think it is okay to bash WLS wannabes or patients. I understand their movement and think that accepting people at any size is a good thing and something that everyone should do. By why, just because someone is able to acccept themselves as overweight or obese do they feel the need to attack those of us who can't? Hell, I wish I could accept myself as am, but I've tried for 41 years and it just isn't happening! I just don't understand people like her who feel they are doing some kind of justice by raising the fear factor when it comes to WLS. |
