Heimlick: by pushing hard on the diaphram you are trying to force the air out of the lungs to "cough" the obstruction out of the way. The stomach has nothing to do with it, so no difference for us.

Medic Alert bracelet: should state that you've had gastric bypass and date, and "NO BLIND NG TUBE". If you are unconcious the ER will push a Naso-Gastric tube through your nose and into your stomach (it's BLIND because they don't look, they just sort of shove it in) to control vomiting and if needed, suction the contents of the stomach. Since we no longer have a stomach, the tube will go into our intestines which is a bad thing.

I'm a paramedic x 18 years.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Yep,Kenya is corrrect. I am an EMT and it is the diaphragm that is pushing the air out to dislodge the object.Anyway if you are choking you could die without your airway open so I would hope someone would do the maneuver for you. The new way of performing CPR ,at least in N.Y. state protocols, is once a person becomes unconscious the maneuver is done as chest thrusts now. Hope this helped a bit. Kathy

My doctor gave me the card, mainly to let restaurants know that I should be allowed to order a child's size meal.

However, some restaurants don't care. We went to a buffet...Adult 9.95, child age 4-8, 6.95, child age 9-13, 7.95...anyways, I ate WAY less than my 7 year old and was charged $7.95. I was so mad, I have not been back since and don't plan to go back.

I think the med-elert bracelet is a great idea. I am going to have to investigate that one.

Have a good day.

i think thats a different card. i carry one that says i have a bypass, it has drs info on it, the name of the hospital where i had it and a small diagram of the procedure i guess in case anyone would need to know in the event i couldnt explain. it was in the back of my info packet when i first inquired and i cut it out and laminated it its for medical purpose. its not the same as the "please let me pay you less for food" card lol. i saw one of those as well. thats for eating out.

The wallet card is not a great idea if you are trying to notify medical folks of your surgery in case you are unconcious. Honestly, once your ID is found, almost no emergency room will continue to dig through your wallet in the first minutes you are brought in.

The necklace will be found by hospitals most of the time because it is usually a team working on the patient, and someone is likely to notice. In an ambulance (which may or may not have standing orders for NG tubes), the necklace almost always goes unnoticed. It shouldn't be this way, but it is... there's just so much to do with an unconcious patient, and so many people wear regular necklaces, that it is going to get missed in most cases.

The bracelet is not a bad idea, though. While almost everyone seems to wear a watch, a bracelet is more likely to catch the attention of the medic or EMT. The first spot for a pulse check is the wrist, a bracelet is not as uncommon, and usually no clothing has to be removed to see it fully.

That being said, 13 years in EMS in both extremely urban (Dallas, Honolulu) settings and rural (Montana, Vermont), I have only dropped an NG tube twice. If you are bad off enough to need it, I am probably more worried about other things first.

Thanks for the info Massive Medic,
I'm getting conflicting stories. I spoke to a young man who is an EMT and he said 2 things:
1) AN EMT doesn't have the training to use a NG tube, only a paramedic (or higher) can
2) A NG tube is usually used to clear lungs, one that reaches (or is pushed??) to the stomach would only be used if say you had an alcohol poisoning (or for some reason needed your stomach pumped)

He also said what you said, they wouldn't necessarily find a card, and they'd be more concerned with the problem at hand, but that if you are truly concerned, the bracelet is the better way to go.
