| Hi to all - I'm an opera singer and I am considering lap band surgery. My biggest concern is the effect the surgery might have on my breath control and diaphragmatic muscles. If there are any singers here who have undergone banding, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I'd love to know if / how the surgery affected you and how long it took for you to get back to normal. Thanks for reading and best wishes to everyone. ~ AltoI

Hi, all, I'm a newbie here (just joined) and am happy to be able to post. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "stupid" question but I don't know where else to post this so I'll go ahead and ask it here. (Actually, I asked it already today but found I'd posted it in the wrong forum -- now, that qualifies as stupid, I guess! lol). Anyway- - here goes: I'm a professional opera singer and am considering lap band surgery. My biggest concern is the effect the surgery might have on my breath control and diaphragmatic muscles. I'd LOVE to hear from any other singers here who've had the surgery. Thanks for reading and I do appreciate any info/ advice you could offer. God bless! AltoI

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. CraigT, who hosts this site is actually a professional singer, though his genre is jazz, rather than classics. He actually started singing AFTER his surgery. Check out his music site, Dallas Bands|Dallas Jazz Bands|Dallas Party Bands - Big-T & Bada-Bings for samples of his singing. That may give you some idea of how your voice may be affected. Now, I know vocalization for classical singing and jazz/pops singing is a little bit different but as far as the effect on your breathing and diaphragm goes, there shouldn't be any, unless the surgeon is clumsy and accidentally cuts a nerve that helps regulate the diaphragm muscles... You may find a difference, though, because with the lost weight, your voice may resonate differently from when you carry a lot of weight. Breathing, though, probably will get easier, because the fat mass in your torso--especially your abdomen (tummy)-- area prevents the diaphragm from moving down as far as it should be able to go. This makes your respiration shallower (and it's part of the reason many overweight people are asthmatics) resulting in smaller lung air volume. I hope this helps you some. ((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.
