Default A scary moment

I talked with Doc about this, but just want to know if any of you had this problem, too. I had all my pre-op lab work faxed to my office today. My liver enzymes were WAY high. I thought my gallbladder sonogram was normal because my surgeon hadn't contacted me. Anyway, my PCP called me today and said that I have a lot of gallstones and the gallbladder needs to come out. (she was sent a copy of my sonogram) She has never been a supporter of me having WLS and said she thinks I should have gallbladder surgery before I have the WLS, and it might be a good idea to have a liver biopsy. It truly almost scared the pants off of me (they were too tight to actually fall down).
I have my final pre-op visit Friday so I am really anxious and worried to see what he says. I think the gallstones are probably responsible for the elevated labs, but it still worries me. I'm thinking of going ahead and having my PCP order a Hepatitis Panel for me to rule that out, then I'll have the results when I go Friday. Sorry for rambling, but I was plenty nervous long before I got those labs back. And Doc, I LOVE YOU for responding to me so quickly this morning.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

ITS very common to have the gallbladder out during WLS. MANY of us have problems with the gall bladder...mine is still in, we dicussed takeing mine out but didnt.
PERHAPS you should find a pcp thats more supportive and informed of this surgery for your care. GOOD LUCK

wannabe... personally i have no gallbladder problems but my surgeon did tell us at our first info session that if we have gallstones or other problems that he would remove the gallbladder at the time of WLs. Apparently it's a pretty common thing so try not to sweat it too much.
good luck

I had a voice mail on my phone when I came to work this morning from my surgeon's office. He had reviewed my labs and thinks that the elevated enzymes are from obesity and we can discuss it in more depth Friday at my appt. I'm anxious to see if he will want to take my gallbladder out at the time of the surgery. My PCP said my liver is enlarged, so makes me a little concerned about it being in the way during surgery. I will be starting OptiFast next Monday, so hope that helps shrink it.
It's kind of a sticky situation with my PCP. I worked with her when she was a resident so know her pretty well. My job as a patient advocate puts me in almost daily contact with her, too. Just wish she was more supportive of steps I'm taking to improve my life/health.

Thanks everyone for the support. I'm sure everything will be fine. I'll see what the surgeon says Friday. He seems very knowledgeable. My aunt died of liver cancer so maybe he will want to do a biopsy during surgery. I'm a little surprised how jittery I've become during the last few weeks and will sure be glad when I'm on the other side of this trip.

My surgeon and advocate who talked me through all of my testings were very concerned on how my gall bladder and liver were functioning. My test were normal.
When talking with the Nutritionalist about pre-op weight loss she explained about how important it was to shrink the liver. Loosing some weight before surgery would definatley help that.
He also had two weeks of protien drink prior to surgery.

It is so very important to have the support you need to get through all of this. I hope that your doctors agree with you that this is the right thing.

Good luck with the rest of your tests....you will do fine and before long your day will come.

Thanks you guys. I'm going to try to put the whole thing out of my mind until I see my surgeon on Friday. Worrying isn't going to change anything and I truly believe that God is in control. Being a nurse sometimes makes me have just enough knowledge to scare me.

Awww Wannabe...I am so sorry to hear that you have to go through all of this. Try to not worry too much though. Like you said, God is in control and you could have no better person to steer your life than Him. We are all here for you and feel free to vent any feelings or concerns you have. Chances are at least one of us has felt the exact same way.
