I am about 13-months postop and I have an umbilical hernia. The surgeon who is doing my hernia is also going to do a panniculectomy. I am not at the weight I would like to be at quite yet. i was wondering if I get the panniculectomy and then lose 50 pounds if it would ruin it.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Im not a 100% postive but I would think not really. The reason I say this is because evidently you need it done because of the hernia. For them to take care of both at the same time is evidently easier and safter. I would say your insurance company is paying for this because of the hernia? Pehaps that is the reason you got it to begin with also who knows. 50 lbs is a lot of weight but your tummy would no where look like it does now after you have already lost 116. After a Panni they say it stills shrinks down for a while after. I would say he will pull it tight for this reason. Just ask the surgeon and im sure he would be able to help you with that question better. Good luck with the surgery.

I just spoke with a plastic surgeon at our support group the other day. He said he likes his patients to be at a stable weight for about 3-6 months before he does any abdominal work. He also said that his group ( who also specializes in plastics on WLS patients, special skin needs) works with insurance companies. Example: if your insurance company allows $4000 for removal of excess abdominal skin, and his surgery for a tummy tuck is $7500, he works to get your current insurance company to pay the $4000 they allow towards your bill of $7500. If the hernia is in need of immediate repair and you can get the skin removed as a freebie, then you can choose that option. But any additional weight lost may reflect in additional loose skin where you had the previous surgery. It's your choice.

unfortunatley; I need to get this hernia removed SOON and my insurance will cover the hospital stay, anesthesia etc. If I choose to have it now it will be much much cheaper.

You need to have this done for your hernia. If you get a torsion and a portion of your guts get caught, it can be life threatening. Most surgeons will want to remove the extra skin at the same time, because it will prevent skin irritations and development of more hernia. As cost bonus goes, insurance will cover the skin removal as part of the hernia repair.

As for the skin issue after this surgery, you probably will have 10-20 lbs skin removed at the maximum, since you've already lost over 100lbs. That will put you that much closer to your goal, and the remaining amount will go down to about 30 or so.
So, no, I don't think you will have to be concerned about the remaining skin after you lose some more. There will be some excess skin, but not enough to be really upsetting, and also, it will tighten up some with time, so it may not be as *spick and span* as after you've lost all the weight, but it should be good enough for most people.

WOW I just happened to log on and I am in the same boat. found out a few weeks ago that I have an umbilical hernia too. I am 1 year tomorrow. Go figure. I had the umbilical hernia years ago, I think alomost 10 or 11 years ago but started bothering me about a month or so ago. Went and saw them and they said to leave it alone and they thought I could hold out till or if and when I decided if I was gonna do plastics. Well then two days ago I had a really good work out with my trainer and also happened to do a ton of ab work. Well about 20 minutes later something major happened. I was in pain. Serious pain. Lasted about 1/2 hour. Called and Im going in again tomorrow but nurse said its most likely the hernia and it may have "popped" out. So Im gonna see what happens then.
What is the procedure your thinking of getting done? Is it a fancy name for a tummy tuck? I never thought I would consider plastics but now that I have this hernia and etc......but my main problem would be $$$$. I dont have money for plastics at this point but if insurance covers it then I might re-consider.

The procedure she mentioned is to just "whack off" the loose skin. It's not a tummy tuck, where the muscles are all tightened, and a minimal scar is left from the skin removal. It's not as pretty as those plastic surgery shows by any means.

A new me...... it should pay for it considering where the hernia is without being deemed as cosmetic. Hernias are dangerous things to just let go and do nothing about.

My guess is...you will have some loose skin if you lose an additional 50lbs after. My Mom is 6 years out and had it done about 3 years ago. She was at 160 ish from 287. She has lost about 20lbs since and she now has loose skin. We were actually just talking about it the other day b/c I noticed that her skin on her stomach looked much looser and she said she thought it was from the additional weight loss. She had been at 160-165 for 1 year before having her tummy tuck. If it is just skin removal...I say go for it...most likely you will be more then happy with the results in comparison to excess skin and if ins. will cover then why not!!

If the panniculectomy is done along with hernia repair, then it most likely will involve muscle repair as well, because the hole from where the gut is *peeking* out has to be closed. Both the muscle wall and the skin wall has to be tightened up to prevent reccurance. In this particular case, the procedure isn't done as cosmetics, it's done as a life saving surgery.
And the result can be clean, because, with such procedures, the GI surgeon sometimes works in tandem with a plastics surgeon for better results.

A new me, not to scare you, but even if your surgeon said let's watch for the time being, if you have repeated episodes, then it's best to have it repaired, as there may come the day when the gut gets stuck in the hole which will result in it being cut off from the blood stream, and die off. Better to be safe than sorry. ((((((HUGS))))))

If you are interested in info from a certified plastic surgoen, check out Dr. Robert Oliver's thread and his site and info linked in there.
