| 3 Days out and have some questions
Hello everyone,
I had my sugery on Tuesday and so far I'm doing great. I was released from the hospital yesterday morning. I have a few questions though. Whenever I breath in really deep it hurts. Is this normal? Also, when I burp it is very painful. How long can I expect the pain from the surgery to last? I have been able to tolerate all liquids so far, no nausea yet. I'm concerned about not having a bm yet. How long does it ususally take to work one out?

Breathing and burping hurt me to- it was a gradual thing and it went away after about 2 weeks. Remember you are really swollen inside! I was never constipated after surgery....in fact I had the opposite problem- so no help there! You sound like you are doing so well!

Have you been using that spirometer--that breathing thing normally given to help you get your lung capacity back? If not, I bet that will help. I got to practice with that spirometer prior to surgery, so I knew my lung capacity. Later in the day of surgery, I tried it and my lung capacity was only about half of what it read prior to surgery. Blowing into that plastic tube will help you build up lung capacity again, and that's probably the source of your breathing. It also helps to prevent pneumonia.

I also had the pain and it lasted a few weeks. You do need to do the deep breathing, if you have the spirometer that Dave mentioned I used it and it helped. Lots on here use mirilax for the bms.

Everything sounds normal, but you really need to use that spiro thing. IT was my best friend right after surgery. Also, do not be afraid to take something for the constipation - try drinking something warm.

Thanks for all your replys. I have been using the spirometer, but I'm not sure I have been using it as often as I should. I have been really vigilant about getting my 1 oz down every 15 minutes. I will try my best to use the spiro. more often!

You are describing exactly what bothered me post-op. I had my surgery on a tuesday and stopped taking pain meds over the weekend. I still had discomfort, but nothing I can consider painful.

Make sure you are using the incentive spirometer 10 times every 2 hours. Also, you don't blow into it. Take a deep breath, exhale. Then place your mouth on the valve and inhale deeply. You should do that 10 times in a row. Many people use it wrong. Inhaling that deeply opens up your lungs more.

| As for the bm thing, you're only 3-4 days out and you were probably pretty empty at the time of your surgery. You're intake is so low that there probably isnt anything in your bowels to empty. For me, it took a few days and then was watery and small; it does get back to normal but dont take a laxative yet unless instructed by your surgeon. I called their office several times the first couple of weeks with questions, so don't hesitate, they're probably expecting a few calls Welcome, by the way, and we're glad you joined us! ~~~ looking forward to getting to know you by your posts
