Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Does anyone know where I can get info on the new weight loss "surgery" using a balloon, inflated with colored fluid. My neighbor is an RN and she says it's not available in the US, but it sounds so good. I understand they put a "balloon" into your stomach and then inflate it. It makes your stomach small and so, you lose weight similarly to bypass or lap. After 6 months it's removed, in the hope that you've learned new eating skills. If not, a new one can be inserted. Apparently the liquid is colored, so that you'll know if balloon has a leak. Supposedly, it won't cause damage, because you will excrete it. Please help me find info, my curiosity is killing me. I have finished my pre-op classes, but still don't have a surgery date.

| Super Moderator | It's not done in the US, and I don't really know where it's done. I have heard that there is such a technique, but not the details, so I can't really tell you anything. However, I don't think it's really much different from whats-it-the-stuff-I-forgot-the-name that you drink and is supposed to expand in your stomach to reduce the space for food. The biggest difference between surgery and this kind of physical obstruction (and also the difference between bypass surgeries and lap-band) is that bypass somehow seems to change the regulations of the various hormones that regulate hunger and satiation. (FYI, hormones aren't just female/male, e.g. insulin is a hormone, they are various chemical substances that our oregans make and help regulate our body functions.) This doesn't seem to take place unless the intestines are moved around. It's this change in hormonal regulation that seems to help lose weight/change your eating habits, as much as the actualy physical inability to eat. Most of you would have experienced *ravaging* hunger while you were/are overweight. but a lot of you who had bypass, will find that the hunger that has returned is in no way as ravaging as the kind you experienced post op. This seems to be due to the difference in the hormone levels post op. That's why the medical community of bariatric surgeons in the US changed their name from just "Bariatric Surgery" to "Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery" and are trying to promote bypass surgery for diabetic cure as well as weight loss. (Though the diabetic cure part, the FDA has not approved yet, and may take a long while yet because this type of thing will most definitely need a concensus from the Diabetes Association and other medical communities, not just the surgeons performing the surgery.) Limiting stomach space for only a given time does not take care of this, and the ravaging hunger may very well return after the balloon is removed. The fact is, if you shift through all the medical literature , then when you read that with revisions done on bypass and lap-band, unless another type of physical change is instituted, the patient will regain most or all of what he/she lost by the surgery. Lap-band is basically in for life, which is why it works, it isn't temporary. Also, eating behavior change consitutes more than just eating less and learning about good foods, often, during your post op journey, you need to confront what food was/did for you in your life. This journey is as much a mind trip as it is a physical one. I am not sure that 6 months to a year is enough to take care of this aspect, when you read the posts from the post ops, even after a year out, many still struggle from time to time with food. Of course, as time goes by, it does get easier, but the struggle is still there. You also need to be aware that after you lose your excess weight, even with surgery, if you go back to your *before* eating pattern, you will blossom up back to your original weight, and sometimes more. It will be so much more easier to do so if your stomach basically remains the same size as before. However controversial surgery was in the beginning, the reason this kind of (in some aspects, a rather drastic measure) treatment has survived and flourished over the some 30+ years it has been in being, is because it is still the most effective way of reducing weight, resolving weight-related health issues, and in keeping the weight off for the majority of the recipients. In all honesty, there is no easy way out, not with medical issues, not with life itself. You need to tackle the by its horns to overcome the obstacles for a healthy and good and happy life. We drs can help you with the how tos, help you provide some of the tools, but in the end, it's up to the person to use the tools and systems. My 2 cents.(((((((HUGS))))))

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I knew it was too good to be true. Everything you said makes enormous sense. I know I need something that will alter my hormones, because the intense cravings I get can even wake me from sleep. My weight and my eating habits have always been an enigma. I consider myself a problem-solver, but I've never been able to solve my over-eating problems. The possibility that I could use the bypass, as a tool, and this board as another tool, will hopefully make a difference.
