I know after the surgery you have to diet and exercise. However, after you get to the weight you're comfortable with, once in while can you have junk food. You know, if it's your birthday, can you have some cake and ice cream, or do you have to give that up forever?

I am a person with a sweet tooth. I eat sugarfree candy but I only limit myself to only 3 in one day. I also come up with a nobake protein bar that tastes so yummy, almost like fudge or fudgy bar. Their are lots of recipes in the recipe forum that are very good. You do not have to give up all your good foods just revise them. I am doing alot of that. I refuse to give up foods that I liked before surgery and now I am into revising them to make them healthy. Their are some protein bars out there that are so yummy, and that will take care of the sweet tooth. It took me a few months to get back to likeing food again, becasue when I first had my surgery I hated the taste of food and always felt like it was a chore to eat. Now I am enjoying eating again but in a healthy way.

Well, depends on if sweets make you dump first of all. I could have a bite or two of cake and ice cream and feel like I curbed my sweet tooth. Anymore, and I would dump and feel horrrrrrrrible, so not worth it! You will be amazed that your tastes change- and there are SO many sugar free options when it comes to sweets you probably won't miss much, but if you do you can whip up a sugar free version and it tastes almost exactly the same. |

i can eat sweets. i dont "dump" off of sugar, or at least i havent eaten enough of it at once to get sick. bread, pasta, and rice make me sleepy. but how we react to sugar will depend on the individual. i think doc said its the amount of intenstine bypassed which determines whether or not a person can handle sugar??? i think thats what she said, not sure.

REGULAR SUGAR IS A BIG NOOOOOOOO. OTHER DEPENDS ON YOUR SYSTEMS you will be visiting the toilet very often if you consume any type of sugar. they say that you need to experience the effect in order to understand why you should not take sugar... my personal opinion is to avoid it, had my experience and I am not touching that stuff. Of course esch person is different and the effects vary on each person.

It's going to depend on whether you dump with sugar or not. Some do, some don't. Even if you dump with sugar, if you can handle artificial sweetners, then you can use that to make cakes and stuff. Some of the dumping is dose related, so even if you dump with sugar, just a gram or two may be fine at one sitting. Ice cream is the same, some can do it in small amounts, some not at all, some in a bit more. It's going to be up to your body and pouch to decide.

and you find alternatives to the sweets you USED to have....I love the flavored rice cakes...and I can eat a hershey kiss or small reese peanut butter cup with no problems...I've had a bite or 2 of cake.... the thing is...after this surgery, if you set your mind, you don't really want those things again....it's kinda like "I know what that did to me before" and you move past a lot of the old habits....I don't eat fast food anymore and can honestly say I do NOT miss it....it's loaded in fat/calories etc...(I had my worst dumping experience from Taco Bell and have not been back since)....one of my old time favorites was the ultimate cheeseburger from Jack in the Box...that sucker has 77 grams of fat...more than I allow myself now for an entire week! |

Like everyone else said, it depends on the individual and also on how much you are willing to pay for that taste. I bought a bag of M&M Peanuts because I really wanted chocolate. I was able to stop at 1/3rd of the bag and had a very slight dumping reaction. That satisfied my craving and I don't want the chocolate anymore. Isn't that amazing?

There all right. Let me put it to you this way.........when your bday cake comes along and its time to eat it....... you will only have a few bites along with your icecream. Your pouch isnt gonna let you have anything more. Then......... your playing a crap shoot on if your body is gonna let it stay in. I think somtimes we get so involved on the stuff we CANT HAVE anymore and it gets so foggy. You will understand this alot better after your surgery. Taste will change. I think they clean our palates. LOL. |

My advise is to not push it. Don't even try it during your first year after surgery. You may dump badly, but if you don't and you are a sweet eater like me, you will be out of control. I cannot eat much in one sitting, but the darn smaller portions go down real well all day long. It is a hard habit to break, so don't start it.
