Default Why Am I So Hungry?

So I had my gastric bypass on Tuesday, it was only suppose to last about an hour, hour and a half at max, but there were some complications so it took about 2 extra hours. Needless to say I'm alive and doing ok. I'm in a ton of pain. But I'm starving... is this normal??? I've been drinking water and drinking my broth that tastes like crap. But I'm still hungry any advice or pointers. I would appreciate it. Thanks so much

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Congratulations on joining the Losers' Bench.

It is most likely "head hunger." Your pouch is not hungry at all, but your brains haven't adjusted yet. If you did try to get in something, you will probably
Take things slowly, one day at a time, the first week or two is tough, but I'm sure you will get through.
Look through some of the posts, you will see a lot of posts that say the same things as you do.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Yes def Doc! You will learn the difference in the hungers. You will get to where you have to remind yourself to eat. Good luck to you.

I'm glad you're home and doing well! It is head hunger and this is a tough spot. Once this passes, you will be fine. Your body is wondering why it can't have food! I had a 6 week pre-op liquid diet and STILL felt hungry the first week post-op! It does get better. As Kath says, this too shall pass.

I'm with Doc, it is DEFINITELY just head hunger. Take things slow and I hope you get to feeling better.

I can tell you, we all can, its ALL in your head. Not being about to eat anything but broths and liquids, watching what seems to be all restaurant commercials. This is your angry mental stage. Why did I do this, I'll never be able to eat that again, I thought I wasn't supposed to be hungry for 6 mos. After a few weeks, you kind of get over the hump, especially after your surgeon visit and you've dropped some 20 lbs or so after two weeks of what you think is starving yourself, that helps. Turn off the tv for a bit, those commercials mess with your head. You'll get over it and we'll see you on the other side.

Welcome to the Loser's Bench!! You'll be on the scoreboard in no time now, and then the fun part of it starts! In the meantime, it is vitally important for your present and long-term health to follow your doc's orders PRECISELY TO THE LETTER!!! The hunger is mental. Your stomach is empty, but it's so battered right now it doesn't want to even think of food! Same with the intestines. However, the body is feeling the pinch, and fat cells are starting to drain and be consumed. I can guarantee you that if you tried to eat now in Day 3, you would regret it within the time it takes to swallow a second mouthful!!

Keep up the liquids! Dehydration is a very real hazard at this point, and that won't help anything! Drink your meals s-l-o-w-l-y and let things settle down before asking the system to do a whole lot more than that. It'll come. Trust us, we've all been there and we know exactly what you're experiencing. And you will live through it, even if there are moments when you think (or even wish) you wouldn't. And life is so much better when you're not carrying around all that extra!!

You'll run and not be weary, and you'll walk and not faint, and your mind will be clearer when you feel all that energy pulsing through (what's left of) your body.

You're on your way!! And you've got the world's best support system!!

"Head hunger" is not a topic addressed by my nutritionist, the 6 months of classes I took on bariatrics before my surgery, nor the surgeon himself. So when I was "hungry" soon after surgery I was convinced they did not do it right, or there was something wrong.

It was only through this board that I learned about head hunger. I told the nutritionist at my surgeons office and the bariatric program adviser that head hunger must be addressed, right up there with dumping syndrome and supplement requirements! It isn't an isolated event or anomaly...I am seeing it is universal!

I told a friend that I am now convinced that probably 85% of hunger experienced is head hunger. grrrr.
