Hi all
I am brand new to this and love to read everyone's questions and responses. I am learning a lot.. Congratulations to you all. you have accomplished what I am only dreaming of right now. You guys are such an inspiration to me.
I have 2 questions.
1) How long after having bypass surgery is it safe/realistic to fall pregnant?
2) I have seen horrific pictures of people who lost all the weight and has such ugly loose skin hanging every where... I am 33 years, had one baby(big hanging tummy after) and wants to know to what extent I can expect loose hanging skin at my age. I am not unrealistic. I know I will have some loose skin...but how severe will it really be ? ?
Keep up the good work!

Hi and Welcome Shakinah! I believe they want you to be at least a year out before any plans of pregnancy. And with the loose skin? Well, it's just really hard to say. It depends on soooo many things. Every individual is different. I've lost 128 pounds, a little over a year out, and I would say "my" stomach looks like I just had a baby. Sure there is some loose and hanging stomach, but not accessive. But then again, it's totally different with everyone. But believe me.....it's sooo worth it!!!! Good luck on your beginning journey!

hi. welcome. i too have seen pics and dont know anyone "in real life" who looked like that after losing their weight. thank god.
i have seen different opinions regarding pregnancy. some say it is safest outside of rapid weightliss which i think is anywhere from 18 months to 24 months post op. there are a few who have become pregnant before that time period passed and have been successful etc. i guess you should ask your dr.

everyone's elasticity is different...and some of the skin will tighten up over time....they usually say get to goal and maintain for 6 months before considering plastics...as you want the skin settled in and the same weight before you have someone cutting things off....I've got 10 years on ya....and I can redefine sagging skin |

I need to run, so just a quick reply.
Most surgeons will ask you not to get pregnant untill a full 2 years out.
However, some *accidents* do happen, and in those cases, it seems the surgeons are supportive about it, will do everything they can to make both your journey and your pregnancy safe.

I've also heard and read that most doctors would prefer you wait two years before becoming pregnant. My surgeon actually refuses to perform the surgery unless you're on the pill afterwards.
As for hanging skin, it's hard to guess without knowing how much you have to lose, etc. I think it also depends on how quickly you lose the weight. Your skin will firm up...but it all depends on whether it can keep up with your weightloss. People who lose weight through diet and exercise don't tend to have much hanging skin because they lose the weight at a slower pace so their skin can keep up. Good luck!

welcome!! everyone has some sort of amount of loose skin after losing that much weight, but in my opinion the key to keeing this at a minimum would be lots of exercize i know it has helped me alot of ppl i am around are surprised that i do not have more than i do...also keep in mind it takes skin longer to readjust when u lose that fast some will tighten up gotta have patience, dang thats right i have none...lol
