Default not skinny

I am so tired of people calling me skinny at work. I hear it at least 20 times a day.I am by know means even thin yet. I have made good progress but still huge. I just say thanks and move on but it really bugs me. Why cant they just say I look nice or something instead of your skinny or a bone?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Just as it is hard to see who you are becoming, it probably is hard for the people around you to get used to the melting you, since they probably haven't seen you at the size you are now in a long time, if not ever.

I agree with DOC. If it bothers you so bad you might have to tell them.

Funny you bring this up. I have thought of this a lot since my introduction to the concept of WLS.

In my conventional dieting history, I have come down to "insurance chart normal" weight twice in my life (both in my 20s) and it was when people were calling me skinny and "too thin" that, unconsciously of course, I began to eat again. My new tool won't totally let me have that option this time.

We could try to either not acknowledge the comment, or change the subject ("How are YOU today? LOVE your shoes...are they new? How is that divorce going for you?") or even to look frustrated or disturbed when we get them, they may get a hint.

I know if I/we can let it go for a year the comments will pass and people will forget the old us.

My 2 cents...your mileage may vary.

its funny how others perceive us...it takes a long time for what we see in the mirror to sink in. if it makes you uncomfy, speak on it. just remember, while the number 58 may not seem like all that much lost to you, 58 lbs lost LOOKS much different. it takes some adjusting to on both ends. you are doing fabulous!

Just keep in mind that these people mean well... They have NO ill intention when saying you look so skinny. Most people would LOVE to hear it but to a WLS patient, it might be a different situation. I'm sure they don't mean to piss you off or hurt your feelings. They're complimenting you and don't mean to make you mad. If it bothers you enough, speak up... I, personally, don't think I would in that situation. If you called me out on my calling you skinny, I know I'd back off and probably NEVER compliment you again in any way, shape, or form. "The last time I complimented her and called her skinny, she got mad at me.".... I'd rather keep hearing the compliments because compliments would give me momentum to keep on workin'. I don't want to lose those.

Good luck!

I agree....they are trying to compliment you and don't intend to make you "mad". I think they run out of things to say and calling us "skinny" is their way of acknowledging our success. They probably wish they could drop the lbs as fast as we have. I just usually say "yep, melting away" or "thanks". As for my looking at myself, I have days that I look in the mirror and think I am still so fat! And other days that I look in the mirror and say WOW look how skinny I am getting. It's a mind thing and on the fat days I have to remind myself what size I am now wearing as opposed to what I wore before. Anyway, 58lbs is AWESOME......you have done a wonderful job.

OH HECK, they can call me skinny all the time. I have been skinny so little in my lifetime, becasue I was heavy most of my life. I was a thin child up to about the first grade and then I started to gain weight and when I graduated I was very heavy. Then I was off the college and then I lost all the weight and my lowest weight when I was a bridemaid to my sisters wedding I weighted 145 pounds and when I got married a few months later, I weighted 160 pounds. As every child came along I gained more and more weight, until I hit my all time high of 384 pounds. It took the surgery to get my weight back under control and I am going to use my tool with every ounce of my will power. Even what I weigh now my husband call me bony and that I am getting skinny and I told him I have a long ways to go yet till I am skinny and when he says that I am bony, I tell him that I am going to get alot boneier yet till I am done losing weight. So anyone can call me skinny!!!!
