Question Protien shakes and alchohol

No not mixing them. Just two seperate questions.

1) Does anyone have trouble eating within 3-4 hours after having a protien shake. I am noticing when I have one that it is diffcult to eat half of what I am suppose to. I would figure that the shake would pass through a bit quicker since it is mostly liquid. My shakes are 16 ounces with 45 grams of protien. Is that over doing it for either of those numbers. I try to have one a day around noon but my dinner "meal" just isn't fun because I put a couple of bites in and that is my limit. Of course later that evening I can have more intake but I was curious is that normal for a protien shake to keep you filled up that long.

2) Had my first taste of red wine with a meal the other nite and it didn't feel right. Got all flustered and hot. Not sure if it was the wine or the rich broccoli cheese soup at the restaurant but it definitely didn't agree with me. I'm only talking about 5-8 ounces here. Special occasion with wife so I couldn't let her drink alone. Felt like it was wanting to come back up but never did but the claminess that came over me was visibly noticeable. Just curious.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

My dietician with the Bariatric Program said nothing over 30 grams of protein will absorb at once. she said there isn't enough studying being done w/ how much you can actually absorb in one sitting. That is one big ole shake too, no wonder you're full. Also, shame on you on the wine, you're suppose to wait 6 months after surgery to drink but each program has different rules too. I started out with being able to drink 1/4 glass, then half a glass, now I can drink a whole glass. I had a bloody mary the other day, was majorly buzzed after a half of the drink. I know, its empty calories but I have like one a month so I don't particularly worry myself.

1) Divide your protein shake in half and take them a couple of hours apart, you won't be absorbing all of the 45g if you get it in in one drink.

2) You can dump from alcohol. Also, your bypassed gut will make the alcohol hit your blood stream much much faster than with a regular stomach. It's said that one glass of wine for a bypass post op is equal to 5 glasses of wine for a none-op. Also, since it hits your blood stream much faster, it also hits your liver faster and harder. Never ever mix gas and alcohol, you are in a much higher danger of being caught with DUI even with half a glass. (Keep in mind, there is the issue of addiction transfer with alcohol, so, an occasional social drink isn't something to be concenrned about, but if you find it getting to be a habit, beware.)

Please do watch the wine. I was never a wine drinker at all before surgery. For some reason I don't remember I tried some and decided I liked it. I had a period of about two months where I was drinking everyday and getting quite buzzed. All my friends said I was such a funny drunk. I think it felt good at first because I could get buzzed so fast and that hadn't happened since I was in my 20's. But after awhile I decided the heart racing, face bloating and mouth running weren't worth it. Not to mention the stop in weight loss. And in combination with the Niacin I take for my cholestorl, well lets just say instant flushing. If you ever have gone through a Niacin flush you know it's not comfortable at all.

So a word from the now wise, watch the alcohol, it can sneak up on you and grab hold.

Consuming 16 oz and 45 grams of protein is not wise. I'm 2 years out, have done well with RNY and I used 25 grams of protein of a protein powder in about 5-6 oz of water. Too much protein at once will not be properly absorbed. On the subject of wine, too much sugar in the wine, and it will probably cause great discomfort or possibly full dumping sydrome as a result. High sugar amounts in foods do the same thing. Any form of alcohol may be too high in sugar to be tolerated by some patients. I'm leery of drinking any alcohol, and have not had any in the 2 years since surgery. You must also be informed that some people who used to be addicted to food, have transferred their addition to something else after weight loss. Some have become alcoholics, used drugs, gambled, etc. So, sometimes food issues from the past have been caused by life tramaus somewhere in your past. So if something in life has created unresolved "issues", you need to find the root cause of these issues to avoid future addictive habits. Not trying to preach here, but making you aware of thing's I've learned at support groups. I find the support groups to be very beneficial to my WLS success, and I strongly suggest that everyone attend at least one per month for at least the first year. I'm 2 years out and I attend 2-3 meetings per month. DAVE

Please understand, and I appreciated the concerns, I was a social drinker before not an alchoholic. I am talking about 1 glass of wine a week at tops when eating out. Some beer but I am through with that because of the carbonation. As I stated, it was a "special" occasion and it was a sip of 5-7 ounces throughout a 45 minute meal. I won't be needing AA anytime soon.

Now that is out of the way I do appreciate the refrencing of sugar in wine. I have not had any dumping syndrome to date. Not sure if the claminess is a part of that but could be. And it definitely was not a buzz thig going on. I can tell the difference in a buzz and being flustered.

As for the protein I will definitely have to pace myself throughout the day even though I am not a big fan of the taste.

Thanks for all the *hic-cup* input.

I too, am a social drinker....and you mentioned not mixing the 2 topics, but I use my profect peach bullets and mix it with pineapple rum...get my protein AND my drink on!!! I have never dumped from alcohol, but then again, I don't drink that much...only on occasion! I also have had wine with dinner....

My only precautionary statement....if you are out to dinner...MAKE SURE SOMEONE ELSE IS DRIVING....the alcohol will hit hard and IMMEDIATE...you would be considered legally drunk, where pre-op you wouldn't....this goes directly into your bloodstream and is extremely potent!

As with everything...MODERATION IS KEY...!! I have avoided beer...because of the carbonation!

I had about 2 oz of red wine and had the same reaction as you. I got extremely hot and flustered. I didn't feel buzzed at all, but I didn't feel well either. Needless to say, I haven't tried another drink since. Since I hadn't had food yet, I know it was the alcohol.

I didn't mean to sound so preachy. I too am a social drinker, I never used to drink at home and never liked wine. Just an occaisional beer when out. So my attachement to the wine took me by surprise. I wasn't suggesting it would turn you into an alcoholic, it just can sneak up on you.

Sorry if I offended you, that was not my intent.
