Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I got to thinking the other day, do I need to disclose to the dentist or eye doctor that I had GBS after I had it. I was at the eye doc last week and was asked if I have had any surgeries or hospitalizations. I plan on sharing this information with all my other docs. But is it necessary to tell the dentist or eye doc if they ask? I just don't see why they need to know. I just want to keep my privacy. Any thoughts?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I would say, as a nurse who does admission assessments on patients, that you need to tell him. If there were ever a reason you needed surgery on your eye(s) and the only history they could get their hands on quick was his and it wasn't on there, there could be very bad consequences. If you were out of it and had to be intubated, they'd go right through your pouch (when they suction your stomach). Or if there were a problem intra-op and you were having sedation and they needed to intubate, I'm sure you would have told the anesthesiologist (the most important person to tell), but there'd be one more person to remember it if things got hectic. I usually do get a health history from a regular doc too, but all medical professionals needs to know. When it comes to writing prescriptions or checking for eye problems associated with nutritional deficiencies. It's up to them to decide if it doesn't medically pertain to their area of expertise, not ours!

| Super Moderator | Yes, PLEASE tell ALL the medical professionals you see for your health EVERYTHING. This is very very important. You may feel this is your privacy, but unless the medical professionals who are taking care you you know your complete medical history, they will not be able to take good care of you. For instance, simple pain medication like NSAIDS very commonly prescribed for pain are a no-no medication of bypass post ops, but if you don't tell your dr about your surgery, the dr may prescribe these meds. So, this is for your own good--to protect yourself from the drs unkowingly prescribing or performing procedures on you that, at the least has to be given/done with great care with bypass patients. Besides, medical professionals are bound by moral and law not to divulge any information about their patients, unless the patients give them the release, with the exeption of direct dr to dr reports when consulting and referring their patients. So, for instance, if you are referred by your PCP to a specialist, the PCP is going to put in the referral document that you had GBS, so the specialist will know that, whether you are being referred for surgery related issues or not. Unless you give medical professionals your complete medical history, you cannot hold them accountable when something goes wrong with you as the result of the medical attention they give you, or miss out on the diagnosis because of the missing information. Also, (this has been discussed many many times here) please get a MedAlert bracelet that says as least "RNY-GBS (or Lap-band, VSG, or whatever method) No blind NG tube" just in case you get involved in an accident or suddenly get ill and need emergency care.

| My dentist and eye doctor always generally ask "Have there been any changes in your health or are you on any new medications?" My WLS is a HUGE change...and it's caused my medications to change...so yes to both for me! I think they need to know. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | The Dentist is a big YES! Because of the calcium issues, you want them to really keep an eye on your mouth and what is changing in it. I guess that I never really thought about the eye doctor. I will have to remember that! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Plus remember due to HIPAA your medical privacy is upheld within federal law. It's very very important to let all MEDICAL professionals taking care of you about having had this surgery. Your dentist is very important because he will see the issues with no enough calcium before your doc will with regular 2 times a year blood work. My dentist I go to has several posties and out of all of them he said so far I have the best 'least lost' in bone issues regarding the teeth. At least so far at 6 years out. On the nitreous, if you need a procedure where you get the gas you'll find it doesn't take much to get you relaxed. So any numbers pre-op will be wayyy too high a dosage of the gas!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I agree with all the advice you were given. All medical professionals are governeed under HIPPA. Even before that law was enacted it was a law among the medical profession not to devuldged any information. They just had to make it a law to make sure it was followed. I personally as a nurse..... never look at that part of the chart. That is between the Dr and the patient. Its simply none of my business. Even someone such as a chiropractor needs to know this. So please let them know for your own safety. |
