Question Surgeon says RNY will be easy--huh??

Surgery's in 3 weeks and I'm trying to get mentally prepared. My surgeon, who operates a Center of Excellence and is well-regarded in my area, seems to feel I'll sail through my RNY with no problems, and may even want to go back to work a week out. Other than having my knee scoped as an outpatient, I've never had surgery. The only times I've been in a hospital was to give birth! I have a hard time believing I'll feel wonderful a couple days or a week after major abdominal surgery. I do have a pretty good exercise program, and apparently I have decent muscles under all my fat, but I'm still not sure that's enough to make this a cake walk. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment, so I'm trying to adjust my immediate post-surgery expectations. I think I'll be very sore, weak, and tired, and that it will be a challenge to get the liquids and protein down. Is my surgeon being extra optimistic, or am I painting too grim of a picture for myself?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

He may be right...the first few days are rough...after 7 days...I was ready to get back to my normal life. It really just depends from person to person and depends on your job. I had surgery on a Thursday...stopped pain meds by Monday and by the next Friday I was ready to roll!!!

You will be tired though...thats the only thing...you will probably want to do things but will be exhausted after about 2-4 hours of activity. Activity meaning driving, grocery shopping, working...whatever. It won't take much to get worn out and that lasted about 6 weeks for me but everyday was better!

I just had surgery last Wed and also stopped taking pain meds by Sunday, really only took them a couple of days to help with sleeping. So far I could see myself going back to work earlier than planned though I have it planned for 6/30. Just today I moved my post-op appt up from 6/26 to 6/23 hoping he will release me to go on back home. I am getting tired of the four walls of this hotel room, and my 3 yo is about to go stir crazy, mom can only do so much to keep him enterained here. So yes if you are in good shape a quick speedy recovery is possibly. I too was very concerned, still am don't get me wrong, but feel very good considering my size going into surgery.

I COULD have worked 4 weeks out, but took 6 because 1) the surgeon let me and 2) because I had a BUTT-LOAD of PTO on my books. I work on my feet. I would have been hard at 4, but I could have done it. I was off pain meds in 6 days, but I wasn't pain free for about 2 weeks.

I think your surgeon is regarding you as one of his healthier specimens, evidenced by your muscle tone and general health. If you cannot go back to regular duties by that one week, tell him so! He is encouraging you like a personal trainer would, IMV.

My two cents...your mileage may vary.

I went back to work in 12 days...I was sore, but I really felt great....Just take it easy right after surgery and follow your surgeon's orders...you will do fine..! The first few days are the hardest, and it gets better each day....there will be pain, and you will wonder what on earth you did....but it improves each day!

Each patient is different. The surgeon's skills in surgery, whether a LAP or RNY procedure, your tolerance to pain, and a host of other issues will be the determining factors when you can return to work. Some do it in around 1-2 weeks, while others take 4 to 6 weeks off of work. Some do have issues, and others want as much time as possible to have a somewhat normaly daily routine again. You really won't know until you get there. I'd leave some extra time available for surgery recovery, and you can always call your boss if you're OK and want to come back to work sooner. DAVE

Everyone is different, you will have to wait and see how you fair. I had surgery on Monday and went back to work on the following Monday. I have a desk job and I took it easy. I went for walks around the block and brought all of my protien drinks with me too work. All the best on your surgery my God be with you, all of our thoughts and prayer also. Stay a positive a you can, it really makes all the difference.

Personally I think you're being realistic. Everyone is different ~ I was on pain meds regularly til I was a solid 5 weeks out -- it would appear I am the exception here, but that was my experience -- I think it is particularly important to take really good care of yourself, lots of rest, sipping liquids and getting appropriate exercise - lots of short walks. No way in heck could I have gone back to normal at 7 days. If you have the time, plan it and if you feel great sooner, so be it, you can always get them to release you earlier.
