| ok, i am ready...no turning back!
i made the appointment today and i got my finances all put together. july 22, 2008 is the day of my rebirth. i am nervous, slightly, but so ready and excited. does anyone have any advice, tips, things they wish they did differently? any lists as to what to bring to the hospital, what to expect when they get home, what to make sure not to do? i am a over-thinker, so i want to make sure i have everything i need before i begin. mucho thanks...this site and these forums have helped out tremendously.

you will not need much at the hospital. i stayed in the hospital gown and really don't remember much...with the pain meds I was in la la land!! remember to sip sip sip water when you get home and follow docs instructions for post op diet. you will be sore and tired but everyday will get better and easier. it took me about 1-2 weeks to get back to doing normal stuff but I was easily tired and needed a nap....that stopped at about 4-6 weeks. get your rest. oh and also...your bed may be uncomfortable so make yourself a nice cozy place to sleep on a recliner or the couch.

Hi there! Congratulations on your date. I had my surgery one week ago today. I can hardly believe the difference in how I feel only a week out. My first bit of advice involves any pre-op diet. If they put you on a liquid or low cal diet before the surgery, it will be tough, but stick to it!! It is so important that your liver is small enough for laproscopic surgery. Your recovery will be easier and complication risks will be much lower.
I agree with Lvmyboys, you won't need much at the hospital. I brought changes of PJs, a book, all my hygeine products, chapstick, etc. I used NOTHING. I was happy just to get up and walk when I could. I would definitely bring the chapstick just in case, as I have heard several people say they needed it. You will probably be too drugged up to enjoy much but a few minutes of TV, if that. It is better to bring things and not need them, than to need something and not have it, so follow your instincts. You may be more alert than I was.
Just know that no matter how you feel in the hospital you will be amazed at how quickly everything improves. The pain subsides rather quickly after the hospital, I was only on pain meds one day after being home.
I also agree about getting prepared to sleep in a more upright position for a couple days, although you may be a lucky one and sleep fine. I found that piling up lots of pillows and laying down at an incline the only way to sleep. I have yet to sleep fully flat, but it's coming along.
Have all your protein planned out. I took the easy way out and ordered Isopure from GNC, each bottle contains 40 grams of protein and I knew I only had to drink one of them to meet my basic requirements (so easy!!). It took me two days to be able to be able to drink 1 a day, but try your best. Stay hydrated!! It is really easy to get dehydrated and it will make you feel horrible. The main thing is that you won't feel up to doing much of anything, so I hope you have someone to stay with you and help. I really think that is the key.
Good luck!!

I didn't use hardly anything I took to the hospital either. I didn't take chapstick (wished I had known). Just take something loose and comfortable to go home in....the hospital will pretty much take care of everything else.....
Congrats on your date...it's coming up so quick!!!

My advice? Chapstick, cell phone, toothbrush/paste, hairbrush, and a pillow for the ride home.
More advice? Don't obsess over the weight loss. Keep a food diary, and let your body do the rest.
For the first two weeks...sip/walk/sip/walk...repeat until nap, then repeat

No chapstick!!!!! You ladies and your waxy chapstick, LOL!!!!!!! Try a real lip balm! My Lip Stuff - natural lip balm in 400 flavors & homemade bath & body products she ships quick, you have lots of time to get some yummy 'flavors'.
I brought a book and never even opened it. I brought lots of things I never touched. But I had pictures of my son, my lip stuff, a pair of slippers, deoderant and lotion. Oh and a cell phone and phone charger!
Congratulations, it's so close!!!!
