Default plantar fasciitis/heel spurs - does it get better?

I have plantar fasciitis and a heel spur and am wondering if anyone has or has had this issue before WLS and did it get better after loosing some weight? If so how much made a difference before it got better?

I can ONLY wear birkenstocks, that is the only shoe that does not kill my feet and I wake up crippled in the mornings. The hardest thing is birks come mostly in sandals and its hard to find some atheltic styles. I have wasted so much money on custom inserts made and expensive shoes. Been told New Balance is best, but nothing compares to birks on my feet. Any shoe with a cusion is painful in the end.

I'm hoping this is an issue I will loose along with some weight, anyone with this problem???????

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

My foot problems arent as severe as yours, but I do feel much better now that I'm so much lighter. I still have to wear good supportive shoes if I'm gonna be on my feet a lot.

I had heel spurs years ago and got cortisone shots(OUCH) in my heels and did,and still do, stretching exercises for my heels. I must say though that the shot fixed it years ago,so my weight seemed not to be the issue and I have not had them in years > knocking on wood < it surly has to help to take the weight off our feet though!!!!

I have horrible plantar fasciitis. Preop I got sized via a computer fitting for orthotics from a foot relief store. They cost about $400. I did not have the patience to use them full time until I was recovering at home. I now wear them to work full time and my feet only hurt on Sunday evenings, after I have been bare footed for 2 days.

I also have some heel cups with a ridge at the base of the plantar fascia. I bought them here. They help when I wear my Converse and other non supported shoes.

I have not lost enough weight to work without my orthotics.

I went to a podiatrist a few times and got stimulation and wraps for a few weeks because it just hurt so bad. But to tell you honestly, I have never even thought about it since weightloss until you brought this post up. So, I guess that I could say that mine is not even there anymore...which I am sure that it is, but it just doenst bother me.

Yeah I have it but after wls it got sooo much better. To be honest I haven't had any problems with my feet since surgery and I wear flip flops daily. Before the only thing that helped were crocs. What a great feeling! You're times coming. Congrats.

I had a heel spur on the front of my right heel several years ago. I had worked as a carpenter in construction, walking on concrete floors for almost 25 years. I had seena podiatrist several times, and had those lydacaine and corotozone injections twice. No improvement. So I opted for surgery. Big issue on healing. It took over 6 months for that foot to heal. I would get "phantom pains" in my foot for several months afterwards. The foot would swell up if I was on my feet for more than an hour, and then take the next day to recover. I discovered SAS walking shoes for maximum comfort. I paid $70 per pair (buying 2 pairs) of these shoes in the early 90's. Guess what? The heel spur grew back, even though I was not doing construction work anymore. Went through injections again, and finally surgery. This surgery healed much better. I don't think I would have needed surgery if I had the RNY back then, but my insurance did not cover it at that time. Less weight on my feet also helped my ankles from swelling up, like they would do prior to RNY surgery. I never found inserts to work well either. I bought SAS walking shoes (big toe box on shoe to handle situations where feet may swell during the day) and Birkenstock sandles also. DAVE

Well I Have To Say I Had The Same Prob As You Infact So Bad I Was Told I Would Def Need Surgery On My Foot Which Is Usually Not Common. I Did The Shots And The Shoe Inserts Which Did Help A Bit, But After A While That Didnt Help Anymore.

Every Since I Lost This Weight I Have Been Relieved Of All Pain And Inflammation And My Case Was So Bad It Was Crippling Me, Unable To Walk Anymore!

So Unless Things Bother Me Again I Will Not Go For The Surgery Since I Feel I Dont Need It Anymore

Yep I had to get some orthotic inserts for my shoes, cost $250 but the cost will be less for other pairs since I know how my foot molds made. They help tremendously. Give yourself a few extra moments in the morning and stretch your feet out good before getting out of bed. Straigthen your legs and then push your toes downward while lying in bed, also pull your toes back toward you as well, does this a few minutes and stretch the foot out before getting up, it will not stop it from being very sore in the AM but it will help and reduce the pain a bit than if you just hop out of bed. Make sure you keep your feet in supportive shoes and don't go around barefoot or in poor supportive shoes particularly on tile, concrete, etc. Also if you sit for a long time also do the stretching of the feet before getting back up to walk.

Mine is a lot better now, and as others have said I am hoping with more and more weight dropping it will only get better.

Wow - thanks all. I hope mine too will go away or ease in time. I too paid $300 for inserts that helped at the time because I could not hardly walk but seemed to stop working? That's when I tried birks and after they broke in, felt the best in years. But just going to grocery store they get sore but not cripling like before. I do the stretching while sitting and my birks. act like a house shoe, am never barefooted, the pain is immediate. I have not done any shots, was told its just temp. It all started from improper shoes and my weight so I hope it will go away while loosing. Makes me feel better that some of you loosers are pain free now.
