Default Toprol XL ?

Was anyone taking the beta blocker: Toprol XL before surgery? I'm taking 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night and was wondering, if you had any trouble continuing it post-op.

My surgeon says I can, but my family doc and cardiologist say there are better alternatives. And yes, I will have to take Toprol for the rest of my life, even after surgery, since I have a coronary anomaly, that will require it.

My surgery is tomorrow. I will check again with the surgeon, but it would be helpful to know if anyone else is taking it. Thanks

Carol

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Yep, I was on it before and I am on it now but at a much lower dose. I have no problems with it.

What's the target blood pressure range? The dosage should come down because your blood pressure most likely will come down.
Also, with the excess weigh that your issue worse gone, it's true you may get a wider range of choices for meds. Since your cardiologist says there are better alternatives, even though your surgeon says it's fine, it probably is worth checking out other medication once you lose your weight. At any rate, since you are taking it for your coronary anomaly, it's your cardiologist who should have the final say.,

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for an uneventful surgery and uncomplicated recovery.

Before surgery I was taking atenolol and about 3-4 weeks after surgery, my regular primary doctor changed it to metoprol for my heart palpitations and extra heartbeats. I had to see a cardiologist and he took me off the metoprol and put me on a different kind of beta blocker. After testing, the cardiologist said the bottom half of my heart was enlarged. This new medicine has helped a lot but I still have occasional heart palpitations.

Doc, do you have any thoughts on my heart situation.

I take Diovan 160 for my blood pressure. The Toprol is more for my PVC's. I agree with you Doc, my cardiologist should have the final word. I am missing the right branch , of the aorta. So, even though my BP will come down, the irregular heartbeat is mine forever. Thanks for always answering my ?'s.

I'll be happy to get off of the Diovan and wait to see what my family doc and cardio doc can come up with, for the Toprol. I'm just not comfortable taking a time release med with such a small pouch.

Thank you for your responses. Hope everyone else with a heart condition finds the surgery helpful.

Well, I'll guess I'll be back around on Sunday, to tell you all how everything went.

Thanks for all your support and inspiration.
Carol

Thanks. I'm glad you can still take it with no problem. It really helps me to sleep at night, because that's when my pvc's are always the worst (believe it or not) lol probably because I also have sever sleep apnea.
