Question Roxen Y Not for weight loss

I had the roxen y in april of 07 not for weight loss. I had a medical issue. How do you deal with all of the changes that are happening to your body. I am haveing trouble eating and keeping the my weight were the doc wants it. I am very nauseated after I eat or drink. I have had a upper gi and it came back normal. I had a bowl obstruction the day after surgery and had to go back in for a second surgery so I live on senna lax. Does anybody have any way to help with food or supplements that won't taste bad and that they are high in protien and fiber. I have been following you for over a year and feel comfortable asking these questions. Thanks for listening.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

im so sorry you are having difficulties at this stage of the game.
if your GI came back normal i am at a loss. i know when i was nauseated my dr put me on nexium and it seems to have eased it. he suspected an ulcer but i dnt have insurance so i cant go crazy with procedures right now. sour stomach or acid causes the worst most nauseating feeling in the world. i hope you find out what it is soon.

in terms of protein, i still use unjury or worldwide protein shakes. the taste is debatable. but i block it out. because i know i have to get it in. i hope everything works out and things ease up for you. if you find something you like please share

There are many sources of protein. Here is a link to a site with very good food nutrional info: WHFoods: protein . My wife and I routinely snack on dried peas, and now have tried dried edamame. Both very high in protein for a small quantity of food. I think you'll like the link for protein sources. DAVE

Thank you Kenya and Dave for your fast response. I am very happy for everybody on here that has lost weight with this surgery and they are very happy. I have been dealing with this for over a year and look back at what other options there could of been. My family say I look alot better just wish I could feel better and get all the vitamins and protien I need to get healthy again. I praise each and everyone of you for going through this procedure you all have inspired me even though mine was for different reasons than yours. I have found that this forum has been so helpful through this.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I don't know what your medical issue is, but personally, this isn't an easy thing to do, so, though I know some bariatric surgeons are suggesting gastric bypass for diabetic cure among other things, as a physician, I am a bit leary to go that far, honestly.

There are lots of recipes in the Gastric Bypass Recipe forum, so please check there, you may be able to find a recipe that helps you with your protein.

As for eating, are you having a difficult time with real foods. You know, if you stay away from real food for an extended period of time, your body will lose its ability to digest and metabolise temporarily, so you will need to reintroduce many kinds of food slowly. Since your GI study came back with nada, it may be that you need to retrain your pouch to deal with food. For this, you may need medication to help along the way, so consulting a gastroentrologist may help you.

(((((HUGS))))) Hope things turn out for the better soon.

There are TONS of threads on here about protein, post-op diets and suggestions on daily meals. I personally get in about 60-80 grams of protein a day and drink nearly a gallon of water! I'm also addicted to sugar free popsicles!!!

Glad you spoke up and joined in....!

PolarBear,
I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. Perhaps if you tell us what you normally eat we can make other suggestions. For instance, if you know your pouch just won't tolerate eggs then we won't suggest ways to prepare eggs. (My pouch makes me pay everytime I try eggs) (

My surgeon was adament about my getting on real fool early out and not getting my protien using shakes/supplements. Now I know why.

You need to use the protein supplements daily, to make sure your protein intake is high enough--especially if you have problem eating. Start your day trying to eat some foods--oatmeal, high fiber cold cereal, a couple of eggs, etc. Eating first thing "kick starts" your metabolism for the day. After 7 months, I'd lost 100 pounds (down to 222) and thought I was done. I stopped going to support meetings and did not pay attention to my normal daily routine for the past 7 months. In 2 months, I got back on the scale, and to my surprise, I now weighed 242. I'd gained 20 pounds !! I started back go to support meetings, as they seem to be very beneficial to my staying "on track" to a RNY regimine. I lost the 20 pounds in about 5-6 weeks, and remained at 222 for another several months. After some research, I found a couple of things. Liquid vitamins are absorbed better by the body. High protein snacks, low volume snacks worked well too--dried peas and dried edamame worked well for me. After 7 months, I now had exceeded my widest expectations from RNY surgery. I now got below 200 pounds, and my total wt loss exceeded 150 pounds. Liquid vitamins, and high protein snacks seemed to be the magic bullet for the last 30 pounds of wt loss. Oh, BTW, my D vitamin levels also got better on liquid vitamins. With standard pilled vitamins, and 3 courses of prescripton high level D vitamins, my best D lab work showed a level of 14. Normal is 30-100. With 7 months on liquid vitamins, and no other D supplement, my D levels now were at 33, in the normal range, but not great. Newer studies show the better levels of D to be above 70 to ward of cancers, bone fractures, MS, neurological diseases, auto immune diseases, etc. Even though my D levels are now normal (low normal, but much better than 14), I now augment my daily diet with 3 or 4 of the 5000 IU D3 supplements from Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks! , and these are small capsules at a very affordable price. You might want to view my profile page link to read about my RNY journey, as it may offer you tips for your journey in this process. DAVE

My sureon was the same. I very rarely use the shakes. I do drink milk though (it is a good source of protein by itself). I can just about eat anything without any problems.

You got some really great advice from everyone on the protein issue.

This issue I am concerned about is the Senna laxative. I am a year from getting my doctorate in pharmacology and one issue we learned about was overuse of laxatives. If you routinely use a stimulant laxative, your body can become reliant on the medication to function. It may be a good idea to wean yourself off them slowly and try something easier on your body like Colace (docusate sodium). Just my two cents, I just don't want to see this happen to you, not many people know about it.
