Default Treating a Cold/Flu

So, I recently had a crazy experience with cold medicine. I understand that anti-inflamatory, ibuprofin etc. I can't have. So, Tylenol is a good choice. On Monday morning I woke up with a sore throat and stuffy nose (nasals hurt a lot too). I went to the store and chose Theraflu in liquid form. (I couldn't find anything in Tylenol form) I'm still a little hesitant on taking pills, I'm scared they're going to get stuck. The directions read I should take 2 TBLSPNS- I took 1 as it's 10% alcohol. I haven't had a sip of alcohol since my surgery, because I know I'm not supposed to. Anyway, I took 1 TBLSPN of the Therflu and it sent me flying high... I was spinning around and light headed- I felt like I drank a whole case of beer by myself.

At the end of it, I'm scared to take more- I don't like feeling out of control like that. Does anyone have any suggestions on what OTC medication would be good to take for cold/flu like symptoms? I'm at a loss-

Oh, by the way- I took Benadryl too (hourse before the Theraflu) and I had almost the same affect- I can't believe how our internal body has changed so much on simple OTC medication. Now, I'm really scared to have a glass of wine or even a sip of beer- I completely understand what people say about being careful with that.

Any suggestions?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I've been lucky enough to not need these meds yet, but I'm sure either doc or someone who has needed them will be on shortly. I know the thera flu that I used to use was in a hot drink form (like orange, apple or lemon) and I checked what I have and there's no alcohol or sugar. I haven't had it since surgery. Also they make thin strips that dissolve on your tongue that I'm sure would be fine too.

A lot of liquid meds have a small amount of alcohol as a solvent. That probably is the culprit, so, for you, it might be best to stay away from liquid meds. Pills probably are better for you. Since you're almost three months out, you should be able to tolerate regular pills.
It's best to ask your surgeon beforehand what he recommends, and stock them just in case. (Out of the reach of small kids, of course.)

I have noticed everything I take in the liquid form makes me "loopy". I used the Benadryl CHILDRENS tongue tabs and it had the same affect on me. My suggestion...take the meds and promptly go to bed! I was out for about 3 hours the first time I took the Benadryl. LOLOL I hope that you get to feeling better!

Never a dull minute for us, is there? Hope you're feeling better soon. I have taken OTC cold and sinus meds and do ok with them, but I usually take them when I'm not going anywhere for a bit until I see how they're gonna affect me.

I always take the Tylenol Cold and Sinus tablets. Benadryl knocked me out before surgery and now it will knock me out for about 6 hours or more. If you need a syrup for a cough stay away from the ones with alcohol. Unless you take them directly before going to bed as Kim said. I actually got in the habit of taking Nyquil so I could get to sleep for a while. Got that monkey off my back thank goodness.

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions. It's so true that there's never a dull moment with us WLS patients I started to feel better and thought I was all healed. Nonetheless, 3 days later I felt like I was hit by a mack truck. I went to the doctor to get some anti-biotics, because I felt like my head was going to explode! Sure enough the anti-biotics did the trick and am all better now.

Back to the point that our bodies have changed so much... While I love the changes, it's not easy getting used to. Every day is a new experience and adjusting to the new me- it's so bizzare the changes- I so not regret this procedure.

The best part for me is that I'm able to run around with my kids now- it's amazing! I went to a waterpark last week and had the greatest time going down the slides- this has allowed me to be a kid again!
