Smile Advice please!!

As you know, I have had difficulty with food since my surgery on 6/30. I had my stricutre dilated 2 days ago and was given the go-ahead to eat again. I feel like I am forcing myself to eat and drink all day. I start the day with a protein shake. An hour later I force myself to eat a piece of string cheese. An hour after that, I try to drink a 16 oz. bottle of protein water. Then another protein shake for lunch. Mid afternoon I try to get a few teaspoons of pureed tuna salad, followed by a 16 oz glass of water, and then a protein shake for dinner. I am so fixated on food and drink right now trying to get in all of my protein and fluids. I start back to work Monday, and am fearful that on the days that I work, there is no way I will be able to get it all in. I am a nurse working 3 12 hour shifts a week. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all of you for your continued support and encouragement.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Just follow your surgeons' instructions, find a way to be able to sip on your water and protein shakes while at work, and it will probably be easier than you think. Good luck on getting better and good luck on going back to work.

As a nurse I can only imagine how hard this must be for you. However, as a nurse I am sure you are super organized. Think about a typical workday (if there is such a thing!) and think about how to plan what you need through your shift.

I admire you for going back to such a demanding job. I wish you had more time to relax and get settled before going back, but I understand the need to get back too.

Good luck, I hope you find it easier to do than you thought.

I suspect it's normal to focus (almost to the post of obsession for me!) on food this soon after our surgeries. Before my surgery, I spent mornings before work thinking about what I was going to wear, what meetings I had, who I'd have lunch with, etc. Now my waking thoughts are, "Remember to make your protein shake, grab an Isopure and a yogurt, take those meds . . . " I find myself constantly aware of how much liquid I drink, how many grams of protein I'm getting, and wondering how the heck I'm supposed to eat the 800-1000 calories a day my doctor told me to yesterday. It's not necessarily a bad thing--I'm definitely eating consciously and not making bad food choices like before--but it can become mentally exhausting! I wish I had helpful advice, but I'm just muddling through, doing the best I can day by day. Good luck!

Hi!
I'm a nurse working 12 hour nights and i know how difficult it is to make sure you get everything in! I use the premixed Atkins shakes a lot just to make sure I'm getting my protein in when I'm working. If you work days it's doubly hard to make sure you get it all in. Tuna in the packets and the individual cottage cheese containers are really good sources of protein too. Those are things you can eat on the run along with your shakes. How many times are you supposed to eat during the day? I also do small packs of peanuts but I'm farther out than you so it probably wouldn't be good for you to do that now. Deli meats and string cheese are also good sources of protein.

Keep a container of water close at hand if you can. Sip on it through out the day. Try to get most of your water in the best way you can although that means that you have to go to the bathroom. As we know, nurses have bladders the size of army tanks because we don't get to go like we should!

Whatever you do just make sure you don't put anything past your lips that doesn't count toward your fluid intake or protein intake. Of course I do a couple of cups of coffee which doesn't count but I gotta have my caffiene!

Good luck to you! Keep up the good work!

Janie

I was gonna say that too. Get it in front of you laid out. Your water anyhow, on a desk somewhere so it will smack you in the face when you walk by. As far as protein goes, same, keep it chilled until its time and set it out where you will see it. Whatever room you document in or where you sit to do paperwork, right out in the open. I lay my vitamins and water right in front of me, Im looking at them now.
