Default Sleep study & what it all means

Im trying to qualify for Gastric Bypass surgery & I just had a sleep study done last night. The Technician said that she found some activity on my study, but nothing "stat". I had asked her the night before if my Dr would find out the results right away, since im having a follow-up apt w/her in just a few days & she indicated that she would, but only if I had anything come up "stat" on my test results. Since nothing stat came up, does that necessarily mean that I dont have sleep apnea? What qualify's you for sleep apnea? Can anyone else tell me what they went through when they did their sleep study & how their study qualified them for Gastric Bypass surgery?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Andrea,
I'm not sure myself, but someone on this site will know. Welcome to our site--you will love it. I had such severe sleap apnea--they fit me with a machine right on the spot! Yikes. So . . . maybe you do not have it severe enough to need a machine?

God Bless,
Becky

I had my sleep study a few weeks ago. I didn't hear anything from the dr. so I assume that meant there was no sleep apnea although I do have to go for a follow up on the 8th. The tech saying that there was nothing stat probably meant that whatever activity was witnessed wasn't anything to be alarmed about. If you do have sleep apnea all it means is that they will use a c pap machine to make sure you stay breathing while under anesthesia so that there are no complications during surgery.

The state of your sleep is monitored and analysed through your EEG (electroencephalogram--brain wave), EOG (electrooculogram--movement of your eyeball), EMG (electromyogram--muscle movement), sleeping position, body temperature, pulse rate and blood oxygen concentration, and air flow around your nose and mouth, so, no, the diagnosis will not be *at a glance*, the final diagnosis can be made only after putting all the results together.

I had my sleep study done 5 years ago. The way they did it was to hook me up and let me sleep all night. They took that data, then called me back for another one, this time to test me for the CPAP. As a result of that study, they knew what machine settings to use, then I went to a medical supply provider, who fitted me with a mask and machine.

In the first study, the tech said only that I had given the doctor something to look at. Found out later that I was experiencing 89 apneas an hour, which means that I was waking up to restart my breathing on average once every 40 seconds, all night long.

The tech won't tell you anything useful, as she isn't qualified to interpret results, but if my rate of apneas wasn't enough to be called "stat", you may still end up needing a machine yet, too.

When I was going through all the tests for WLS last year, I didn't have to take another sleep test, as I was already controlled. My wife, though, will be taking her test next week, as she has never been tested. Same surgeon, same insurance.

BTW - my sleep apnea kinda faded out and disappeared about the time I hit the 70 pound loss region. I no longer need a CPAP. My wife may end up using mine if she needs it.

Your mileage may vary. That was my experience. Hope this helps you.

I had had my sleep study about six months before I went for my first intake for the surgery. So I didnt have to get one for my surgery they just used that one. I didnt have apnea though so I was lucky in that respect. I am glad to see that you are on your way though getting the stuff done you need to.

YAY! I have sleep apnea! Scarry that we all get so excited when we have a health problem! But at least this way, it helps qualify us for surgery I had 75 hypopneas & my REM was 39% during my sleep study
