| Pizza and Bear anyone?
I knew before surgury that I was ready to make life changes but today after having approximately 1/4 cup of gumbo I needed more. I was ready to go back to my old ways. I wanted more - heck I needed more, like the fried catfish and hushpuppies that I saw a lady eating next to me. I've trying to brush it off but now I want Pizza and a bear. I didn't realize until a minute ago how big my problem is. I love food and I actually feel a little depressed this evening.

| This is def a head trip and there will be cravings for sure. I found that many foods dont taste like they did before and that's assuming you dont puke them back up. There is no reason you wont be able to have a slice of pizza at some point (not this soon by any means) and there are those who have a beer (although my doc says it's a no and I don't push it) -- the point is this sounds a lot like head hunger and like you're mourning a loss ~ namely, your friend, food. Maybe by coming on here and venting and talking about it, you will deal with it and then when you're further out and can have whatever, you'll make good choices for the right reasons and eat normally, not the way we used to . PS - at 17 mos out, I can eat 1 slice of pizza comfortably.

You are completely normal!!! Most of us (me included) will always have moments of what I like to call "food envy". Our old habits are hard to break, but the bottom line is that if we want to be successful we have to push through it. Some days are worse than others, but don't give up, you will get better at it!

Oh I hear you! Pizza! Ohhhhh! I love food too and have food envy when I eat with my husband! But, I have a friend who says "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". I keep trying to wrap my lips around those words.....

Hang in there alot of it is head hunger in the begining. Been there done that. It does get easier. It is like mourning a good old friend that we have lost. Hang in there.
I still say the mind part of this is the toughest part of this thing.

Yes, this is as much a mental trip as a physcial one.
This may help you with your food thoughts. Click the blue letters and you'll be linked to the article. Dear Food.

It will get easier. I remember going into the surgery thinking how much I was going to miss certain foods. To be honest with you, I don't miss stuff as much as I thought I would Ok, for the exception of Pizza! A real weekness for me. I have yet to eat a whole slice in one sitting, I guess I probably could being 21 months out from surgery, but I just let my self think I can't. Im safer that way! LOL. Definitely my taste has changed since surgery, really weird, but things taste so much different but in a good way. I guess I savor the little bit of food I am allowed to have where as before just gobbled it down without a thought.

Well yesterday I had a horrible eating day... I got into the xmas cookies and did real damage. But today is a new day, a fresh start and today I tell myself that I will control the food not the food control me.
You will have hard days, when you give in, don't beat yourself up, be strong and start again. Food is an addiction for us and we have to fight it every second of our day unfortunately.

At 8 months out I still struggle every day with food envy and head hunger. Pizza is also something I love and get rather sad when my family is eating it. I do have a piece and try to make sure it does not have any "bad" toppings. We have to remember that once you are farther out there are no forbidden foods in moderation. "Thin" people eat all types of food, they just know when to stop and realize the importance of excercise. I tend to obsess about food all day but I am trying to remind myself, eat to live, not live to eat. It is an everyday struggle that has to be dealt with.

This is a journey of learning to "Eat to Live" not "Live to Eat".
